My dad was JUST LIKE THAT. When Star Wars showed up in Sweden he was like "just another b-movie" and refused/threw away any sort of star wars toy he achieved from friends/parents.

He would flip if he knew what those original toys of Star Wars is worth today..

Yeeeeep ... hence why I am a little peeved that my dad's geekdome doesn't extend to the SW universe.

I guess I am lucky there. My mom and I are so much alike its not even funny. I think she actually has more action figures sitting on here computer tower than I do. And one of my Favorites is the R2D2............now if I could just find that silly interpreter droid C3PO............He's probably off in the corner whining about how the world is coming to an end.

Aw. It's okay my parents basically missed anyone and anything that was cool and alive during their younger years. I dislike them so much for it. You should have met my grade eight teacher he quoted Yoda a lot. And he also had a Jabba the Hutt figure on his desk.

Oh.

My god.

That is one awesome teacher.

An animator is renting my dad's old house on Bowen Island and we visited him once to see how he was looking after the place. I squee'd when I saw the Storm Trooper, Darth Vader, and Boba Fett life-sized helms he had on display by his working desk.

My dad is the one who took me to see the three new films in the cinema, I was young and laughed my ass off at Jar Jar Binks (how young and stupid I was), and I love him so much for it. I am sorry for your dad's failing.

My dad knew where we were going and what the movie was when we went off to see Episode III in cinemas, but once we started talking about it he was lost.

At least your Dad knows what Star Wars is. Mine doesn't know the difference between Star Wars & Star Trek, and it took awhile of explaining for me to get him to understand WHO George Lucas was. When I was working for Lucas he would tell people, "Yea my son works for George Lucas, the guy who made Star Trek." I even lost him on Indiana Jones.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

quartervirus-archive In reply to tweedfu [2010-11-13 01:56:59 +0000 UTC]

My dad knew that difference, at least, enough so that when I was talking about "some boring show on space that I just saw" as a kid he could look at me and say "Oh, you mean Star Trek?"

I'm going to say "luckily" at this point. Try telling your dad about your day or your latest obsession when he has difficulty grasping the concept of a lightsaber.

That is too funny. I got my hubby that T-Shirt, along with a ROFL-copter one. Since he's a helicopter pilot and geek all in one of course.

Geez, why can't parents be forward-thinking telepaths and automatically get interested in all the things their kids are going to be interested in? Its all their fault, really. Of course the weird thing is that now that I'm getting older, I -am- getting interested in the things my parents were focused around. Except my Dad's obsession with fishing.

I keep mine in a little glass tank, thankyouverymuch.

My dad loves that shirt. Sadly it doesn't do much for him, since we're all still clambering to him to fix our PCs either way.

My dad and mom aren't really very compatible with either my sister or me, and my sister and I are such polar opposites sometimes you'd think we were adopted.

lesatho In reply to quartervirus-archive [2010-11-13 23:00:11 +0000 UTC]

Heehee, yeah, even half a world away and embroiled in whatever Army work he's got going on for him, my husband is still my go-to tech support guy.

My sister and I were the same way. Noooo intersecting interests though. She was into clothes and makeup and boys and I was more interested in video games, computer games and scribbling out my own versions of characters. But we still work somehow and are bestest friends/sisters now Growing up can be cool sometimes.

quartervirus-archive In reply to lesatho [2010-11-14 02:35:42 +0000 UTC]

My sister and I had more in common when we were small, usually because one of us would think the other was cool and would go along with their interests, either me to her or her to me, it tended to alternate. These days we know very well that we're different and don't share a lot of interests, but we still get along. Better than before, I think, because we can settle disagreements with more maturity than say, ohh ... throwing each other's favorite toys onto the top shelf where the other can't reach.

Somehow its a little heartening to learn that kind of childhood pettiness didnt just take place in my house. Of course we also had the aid of the dog, who will take interest in chewing the leg of any barbie doll that comes near her face after the dozenth or so nose-jab >.>

And my mom lied to me about Han Solo!
