How about a character from different universe x canon characterΒ

I wrote my OC having a crush on a canon character, for the purpose of a running gag.

Yeah, I have a few friends who do that, and it often works.

But here's the question: What's your idea of, "done correctly"?

I agree with this stamp, though it's ironic that I see it the most on really awful FCxCanon ships that rely solely on the canon character to give personality to the FC.

I agree on some parts but had to disgree a teensy bit. I don't want toΒ be too much of a canon Nazi, but some characters don't need love interests or even deserve one. Romance can be experienced to everyone, but that doesn't mean it is alwaysΒ perfect for them. It depends on personality and their views towards romance. Some characters don't have an interest of romance or prefer to be more independent with no need for someone special to be in their life. Also, some characters won't work well in romantic relationships or will make it one-sided. Characters that are cruel, psychopaths, sadistic or just generally treat others like trash don't deserve a love interest. I'm not saying you are wrong, but I'm just saying that romance is suitable for everybody. If you like OC X Canon, it's fine, but it isn't my cup of tea.

It becomes a problem when the Canon character gets a love interest, than it's ruined.

RockmanGurl [2015-12-01 22:04:22 +0000 UTC]
Indeed. When a character is a person and not a plot device and has realistic flaws and traits, plus something to possibly aid in being the character's 'other half' (though this should NOT mean solving all their problems, just a relation), then yes.

Agree, that describes my OC, prone to making mistakes
and showing character flaws, plus she hated this Canon
Character for a long time before falling in love.

Yes, yes, and yes! Though I feel I'm not that good of a writer, I feel that even I must show all of the person, both ups AND downs, and especially growth. That goes for their relationship too.

Wow that was a speedy reply XD
I think you could be a better writer if you tried.
Although writer can be hard.Β
I originally wasn't going to have these two as a couple,
Since my character had a crush on another OC of mine
, but I decided to deal a little twist there, and
decided to have her date her worst male enemy,
Much much later

And also this is my opinion. I only support a OCxCanon if it realistic, no Mary Sue and ifΒ that character also hasn't an official pairing, for example I really don't like EdwardxOC, becauseΒ he already has Winry and he is very happy with her,Β I not see the point or reason to change that,Β and I have an OC that is the best friend of an Canon character, but they are just friend because I know that that character has a personality that makes not fall in love with someone else, but they are happy with that

to "done right".
Well, it's fine to have an opinion, but I might respectfully disagree and argue; there is no 'rules' in fiction.
You are allowed to have non-canon character changes with a fan character. Non-canon is creative too, and it's allowed.
So this idea that it's "not" correct just because the canon character isn't canon, is honestly bullcrap.

To be honest, I only like it when they are saved by the Oc/canon. or the CANON IS NICE TO THE OC
Katherine saves Mario from a Boss bass
Mayanna saved Luigi from a rabid hater
Brunhilda saved Yoichi from a giant
The shake king is nice to Audrey
Mackenzie saved Abe from an Mpreg fan
Mr.L Was nice to Eva (But Mr.L is dead thanks to Princess Peach)

I see WAAAAAAY too many OC/Canon shippers who completely destroy the canon character's personality *coughcoughdialacough*, and it really ruins OC shipping for the rest of us.
If you're going to insist on that, you have to keep the canon character as they are canonically. You can't just "oh so casually" make a friendly character violent just to serve your disturbing fetish, and you can't make a violent character suddenly sweet and cuddly.

I would agree with this, considering most of my fanfictions have a major fan character, who is more often than not paired with a canon character. I haven't always done it right though, and have deservedly been criticized. But, when you do it right...it is truly a beautiful and amazing thing to behold.Β
