Description My second inverted drawing! I couldn't resist to draw an inverted Loki picture!
But this time I waited for good light conditions and took my good camera to take a photo of this drawing... For now my eyes hurt enough and my mind is still a little bit confused about all these negative colours. So my next drawing will be "normal"...

Reference was a promo picture of Tom Hiddleston as Loki from the movie "The Avengers" (2012). Of course I inverted the colours of this picture (= negative) in Photoshop before I started to draw (I used the normal and the inverted picture for reference). The four colour pencils are just on the photo to show the effect and I used a few more colours for this drawing.

Paper DIN A4 190g/m², Faber-Castell Polychromos artists' colour pencils, time: maybe 12 hours?

Please don't upload my pictures somewhere else without my permission. Don't infringe copyright!

Thank you!
For an inverted drawing you just choose a reference, invert the picture, draw it like that (negative), take a photo of the drawing and invert it back to normal in Photoshop and hope that you matched the colours + everything else perfectly.

what devil magic is this?!

I screen capped and put a bit into Photoshop and inverted it only to ave it be the same just flipped ... How have you done this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Quelchii In reply to SlayerXiena [2015-10-04 12:08:42 +0000 UTC]

You just choose a reference, invert the picture, draw it like that (negative), take a photo of the drawing and invert it back to normal in Photoshop and hope that you matched the colours + everything else perfectly. Sometimes it can be a bit confusing, but most of the time it works.

SlayerXiena In reply to Quelchii [2015-10-04 19:33:18 +0000 UTC]

but you have textures I can't see in the vert that appear in the 'non-invert'

though I am legally blind so maybe I can't see the pencil marks cause of that....

Honestly I'd love to watch you live stream making an inverted drawing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Quelchii In reply to SlayerXiena [2015-10-04 20:43:24 +0000 UTC]

That's an optical illusion. I always edit the non-invert first, before I finally invert it and make these deviations. Sometimes it's very difficult to see stuff in the non inverted picture. Then you invert it and suddenly you see (for exampel) a big glowing dust particle in the invert! The white parts just outshine some details, but when you invert it they suddenly appear.

There's a trick how you can see that these pictures are exactly the same, by the way: Just invert this picture. Then it looks like you just flip them from one side to the other.

I plan to make some videos, when I feel better (got backache and more health problems at the moment) and find out how to make these timelapse videos. A live stream would be not a good idea, because when I draw something it's 30% drawing, 20% answering stuff on deviantart, 30% staring from drawing to reference and 20% drinking coffee or eating chocolate.

SlayerXiena In reply to Quelchii [2015-10-04 21:30:12 +0000 UTC]

Yes I did the invert thing but you still got details...

Anyways I hope you feel better hun. And just play music for watchers on a live stream.
Trust me I will be there the whole time watching and studying.

Which details do you mean?

Thanks

SlayerXiena In reply to Quelchii [2015-10-04 21:52:33 +0000 UTC]

Skin textures and other really small things that show up when you pull from the pale blues and whites.

Quelchii In reply to SlayerXiena [2015-10-04 22:03:44 +0000 UTC]

I can see the pale blue textures on my laptop screen in the non-invert (ok... probably not on my smartphone screen, because the contrast is too high). Everything else is the "magic of an inverted drawing". You should try it. The effect is always "magical". Sometimes you really get textures that you didn't notice in the negative before.

SlayerXiena In reply to Quelchii [2015-10-04 22:07:04 +0000 UTC]

Well I'm legally blind. Most my art I see one way and others see it another,
I often have to zoom in as close as I can even when doing art by hand (on paper)
so I'm sure there is more then I can see which is why I want to study your hand
and pencil movements. I may not see the marks on the paper but what I can see
is how they got there //.^

Quelchii In reply to SlayerXiena [2015-10-04 22:12:22 +0000 UTC]

Well, I can tell you a little secret how very pale textures get on paper on my drawings. No pencil movements... I use a pencil sharpener and make "colour pencil powder". Then I apply this powder with my fingers on paper. I often use this for inverted drawings, when I have to draw very, very pale areas like clouds, smooth transitions or something like that.

My mind has also been blown apart.

It's a photograph, I swear ;.; Bravo!!!!!

I can imagine that the inverted technique is very helpful for darker scenes like this one, but only you (and maybe like a dozen others in the world or so) could actually make it work! I might give this a try once!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Quelchii In reply to xWolfie36x [2015-08-23 13:07:18 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

It's not that hard. You just invert a reference picture and draw it. Ok, drawing some parts and matching the colour can be a bit difficult, but it's always fun to see the result!
By the way: It's probably possible to invert a black and white picture by yourself (in your mind), but for colored picture you really have to invert the reference first.

Well miss, i have a lot of types of drawing i first need to learn before EVER thinking about doing this.
As long a i am struggling with anathomy and shadowing i will not attempt anything else ( first things first
But maybe in the future when i can draw a full body, without trowing away 8 pages because you see the erasermarks to mutch, i will try. XD

Quelchii In reply to Pentacoil [2015-08-11 20:16:25 +0000 UTC]

Ok, that's true. It's better to learn the basics first!
But this method can still make a few things easier.

Pentacoil In reply to Quelchii [2015-08-12 04:42:20 +0000 UTC]

Why is that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Quelchii In reply to Pentacoil [2015-08-12 12:25:01 +0000 UTC]

It's pretty useful for very dark pictures, because then you don't have to draw so much and save a lot of time. Example: if you draw a sky with stars at night you just have to draw a few dots.

Whaaaat. You draw. In negative. Like, I'm happy that I draw something. And I'm like, super happy when I guess a right negative colour for blue. And you DRAW THIS WAY! IT'S SO AMAZING!! *yelling* *parents comes in* *quiet as a fish*
It's SO cool. Wonderful. MARVELous. Fantastic. Perfect. Stunning. Awsome. And I don't know what else.
