Description A study for a larger print (that I haven't started yet), done on the back of an older block. I've never carved a pomegranate before, and I figured I needed to practice. I learned a lot from doing this print that will hopefully make the larger piece more successful.

The bee carving was a last-minute addition, but I think it fits.

5 1/2"x9" (paper size 9"x14") reduction woodcut, 7 runs, 40 impressions. Originals are for sale; note me for details.

I think the bee is a nice touch and subtle. Like if you want to work alchemical symbols in at a lower color contrast it rewards the viewer for looking longer but isn't necessarily the first thing they see.

Your pomegranate looks like a heart. I don't know if that was what you were thinking about when you carved it but it's great. And as always a sophisticated color palate. Not convinced this needs to be a large print... Would you increase the scale of the textures?

That's a good idea, I like the idea of making people look longer to see the symbols. I didn't even think of the pomegranate looking like a heart, but that's *awesome*. That's like...perfect.

The larger print is actually going to be a different image entirely- my thinking behind making this one was "huh, I've never carved a pomegranate before. I should probably practice before I do this giant (well okay, actually kind of small but I'm lazy) print that has boatloads of pomegranates in it." And then my next thought was "well, why don't I make it a real print instead of just a study?" And then this print was born. I definitely learned a lot from doing this and hopefully I'll be able to make the pomegranates on the next one look better/more realistic.

Very nice. I like how the bold red colour echos in the lines of the tree bark.

Thank you!
The original plan was to have the branches solid brown without any lines, but I added the lines and bee on a whim and I think it works much better this way.
