Description Venusaur seems to be the least popular of the Kanto starters, even when you toss the Basic and Stage 1's into the equation. I don't understand this; a giant temnospondyl in a symbiotic relationship with a chimeric plant is way more interesting than an orange dragon or firehose-Gamera.

Didn't feel like drawing a bg, so I dumped him in Florida (my own photo.) What? It fits.

I live in Florida and I know a lot of areas look the same, but do you know where the background is from? I do like the idea of putting Pokemon into real photos.

It was somewhere in Brevard County, don't remember where exactly though. I'd like to visit again, I miss the wildlife :c

The awesome part, turns out he's realistic when it comes to salamanders.
Salamanders are symbiotes from birth, their very fetuses have chlorophyll in them (choloroplasts) and algae, and it's fused to their very mitochondrions!

I love the way you did the skin and the flower! And the way it fits perfectly with the background photo, both space-wise and habitat-wise, is really incredible!

Octoboy-the-8th [2010-01-15 08:07:15 +0000 UTC]

The use of a real background for this style of pokemon slightly diminishes the realism, BUT...

Ignoring how shown up the pokemon looks in its environment, it's actually a pretty nice real pokemon. I do like the scale patterns on it. The plant could use a little more detail; the leaves and the middle of the flower appear particularly cartoony, but the animal's well done.

And as cool as venusaur's concept may be, most Kanto trainers are pretty much sold on charizard's draconic appearance. But you've made this venusaur look cool!

It may be the lest popular but it is one of the most beautiful. I choose popularity on a number of basis including, agility and speed (which venasuar lacks) but he is gorgeous.

I've always loved the Bulbasaur family over the other two strains; especially as in Red and Blue, Venusaur showed up at level 32- four levels sooner. And you got an advantage over the first two gyms with the grass starter, to top it off.

Why choose someone else?

My favourite final evolution of the Kanto starters would have to be Charizard (yeah I guess I'm predictable there), but Venusaur comes in second. I never was much of a fan of Blastoise, despite water being my favourite type.

Anyway, great job on the body texture here, as well as the way the petals curl. Very nicely done.

While I agree that the -saurs don't get enough love (and am happy that I learned a new taxonomical term,) I must ask you to not dis firehose-Gamera. I mean, Blastoise.

RacieB In reply to Paruser [2009-11-14 00:38:30 +0000 UTC]

I DO like Blastoise, he's ridiculously awesome. I just like Venusaur better! If I wasn't currently burnt-out on drawing scales, I might attempt a realistic version of one of the turtle line..

Paruser In reply to RacieB [2009-11-14 04:03:10 +0000 UTC]

Hey, your art, your choice. Besides, there are already plenty of realistic Blastoises on the Internet.

Pretty nice work. I've always loved Venusaur waaaaay more than the others. I have kind of an issue with the background in that a more appropriate photo could have been used. Venusaur live in tropical climates, which you got right, but they tend to congregate in or near forested areas. Nice job, though.
