Description 'horricos' was the first word to pass her lips. she wrote long before she could speak and her parents were afraid she was mute. they didn't care that at a young age she was able to write- simply that their child was different; wrong. after she spoke her first word they inquired to what it meant. she looked at them with wonder and a sadness not to be felt by such a young little soul and did not say a word. they got angry at her and stormed off, spewing hurtful words that meant little to her. after she spoke her first word she did not speak again for a long time.

'horricos' was the only word she spoke at her fathers funeral. she was now in her teens and the fact that she never spoke put people off more than before. as a little girl her parents brushed it off as a phase to all their friends. brushing her off. however, it was becoming increasingly difficult to hide the fact that she was different; wrong. her writing was now polished and eloquent and her teachers wondered how it was possible that she refused to speak though her words were so beautiful. others simply assumed she had nothing to say and her mind was empty and her life was empty.

Horricos was the name she gave her son. the product of a passionate night. no words were exchanged- just moments, feelings, touches, glances. he was a talkative child but did not seem to notice that his mother never spoke. he knew he was loved by her touch and the way she tucked him in at night and turned on his light show lamp, laid down next to him and let him fall asleep in her arms. whispering 'horricos' into his little ear before he fell into a peaceful slumber.

'horricos' was a word she did not use often. in fact the only person that ever heard the word was her son. she was not a timid person and her decision not to speak did not cripple her. it was the world that was stumped by her and she was alright with that.

'horricos' was the only word he spoke at her funeral. he knew his mother was the most exceptional woman in the world- sharing her essence through her words- the words others refused to acknowledge, refused to hear, refused to understand. in her lifetime she had shared millions upon millions of words with the world and no one would know because talking is normal and writing down how you feel is not. she had even written a letter to him attempting to explain herself before she passed, to be given to him upon her death.

my dearest son Horricos, i am sure you are wondering what your name means and i am sorry that you will never be able to remember my voice but i hope you will remember my words. horricos means 'i love you'. when i was a child i had a dream that no one in the world spoke but me and the only word they would understand was one that i had made up to tell my parents. if i could only speak one word for the rest of my life i wanted it to mean something strong, something real, something important. i love you my son, and i hope you know that with all of your heart, even though i didn't say it.

though his mother had never spoken any other word than his name, Horricos had already understood his mother better than anyone with whom he had spoken to. he knew that emotions spoke louder than words ever could. he walked to her grave and placed a ripped piece of paper on her tombstone. all it read was,

'i love you'.

Wonderfully simple~ I like how you broke it into neat moments in time. It reads almost like prose poetry.
