A GG1 in Illinois?! As much as I love the T1s, I would've loved to see one of these running somewhere other than the Northeast Corridor.

It is preserved at the Illinois Railway Museum. It would be interesting to see it run there.

This is one engine my HO fleet needs.

GG1s are very nice locomotives for both model and real-life collections.

Only one I've seen recently that I'd be interested in is an MTH Tuscan Red 5-Stripe version for $400.Β Maybe I'd be more interested in it if it was about $100 cheaper.

I know Bachmann Trains makes GG1 models, and they run around $330.

For that price, I'd rather spend the additional $70 and have the MTH.

Extensive conversion would be required for a return to operation, even in the case of the air-blast GG1.Β It would be something to see, especially at speed.

It would. I would never plan to see this engine at speed since it is all the way in Illinois; plus, the IRM was able to restore a Little Joe to operation, so why can't they do it with a GG1?

The trouble with the GG1s is that you'd have to do a Frankenstein due to how worn out some of the frames are, not to mention the polychlorinated biphenyl cleanup, the reconfiguration of the traction motors and auxiliary systems, etc.Β It's probably not impossible, but I'd be a bit worried about other stuff getting neglected for the sake of such a project.
The Little Joes were simple by comparison, since they were already set up for DC (and possibly operated in multi-voltage areas) and basically just needed changes to existing switchgear, MG sets, and conversion from series to parallel motor arrangement for operation at ~600V instead of ~1400V.

Expensive as it might be, I want 4876 to be restored for operating condition. Sure its seen better times but it has perhaps the best story to tell out of ALL the GG1s!

#4876... that was the one that went hurtling into Washington Union Station with the Federal Express back in '53, wasn't it?Β The real-life event that inspired that classic crash scene in "Silver Streak".

It would be cool to see it on the NEC. The 4927 would be a nice candidate to restore for use at the IRM.

Perhaps they CAN get this thing running, since its only like 4 or 5 miles of track? Whats this thing internal condition on a scale of 1 (scrap) - 10 (why isn't this thing running yet)?

Last I heard it wasn't junk, but it would need considerable work to get it rail worthy again.Β Β About a 6Β I would say. Anything is possible though.Β When #4927 arrived at IRM, she was Amtrak #4939 and covered in that ugly Amtrak black paint.Β Now of course, she's wearing the old Pennsy Brunswick Green, 5 Stripe livery.

I have no clue. I know that it could be done since they have a Little Joe running there, another big electric.

The GG1s are kind of...special, given that all but one (the one with air-cooled dry transformers) have had their PCB-filled transformers removed and lost other assorted portions of their electrical equipment in the process.

They were all gutted at the end of Amtrak service, since it wasn't practical to replace the old Pyranol-filled transformers and switchgear on stuff that was nearly at the end of its operating life.
