Description So it finally happened, after 1 and 1/2 years on dA I finally drew rain. I can finally live up to my user name!
Was quite a challenge painting this one as i wasn't sure how to make the light react and what shades to use but i think I got it to some extent. All in all though it was a fun piece to work on and it was nice chatting with those of you who attended the stream while i was painting it!
Working on a few other pieces to post in the near future so you can catch those during my oddly now frequent streams!
Would love to hear what you guys think, go ahead and leave your thoughts below

Also check out the awesome track by NicolasDominique to go with this!
You can find the songΒ here

That's all!
Thanks

Overall

Vision

Originality

Technique

Impact

Well, you're definitely learning something new with each piece. You have a great brush technique, on a technical level you're very impressive. However, there seems to be a consistent trend throughout a lot of your works, and that is that your composition really needs work. This piece and rain-gear.deviantart.com/art/R… in particular both have that same problem. A lot of your pieces like this one just really lack focus and balance. The viewer's eyes have a hard time focusing because there's simply too much going on with nothing to balance it out. You can have a shot that is dense and rich, but you need to determine a focal point and make sure that you draw the attention to that point. With this, the focal point should be Trixie herself, but you put so much detail to the side of her that it gives the piece a really imbalanced feeling. I can definitely see what you're going for, but I would recommend scaling it back. Detail isn't always needed, and in works like this one and others that you've been doing recently, it's actually too detailed for its own good. There are plenty of places where you can read up on color technique and composition, so I would suggest doing a little homework. Your characters are good, your backgrounds and landscapes are really fucking good, but you need to learn to make them work together. And hey, with as fast as you've been learning, I have no doubt you'll be able to improve.;D

You know what I like the most about this? The Windmill in the background. Hardly anyone draws such buildings anymore, and you even let vine grow on it.

Also, your lighting shines the most intense if you only look at the bottom of the picture and hide the top. Then one can truly see the brilliance of the spectrum.

Good job. One thing though, the brim of the hat resembles a disk imo and it be better with a bit of a curve in it.

It's hard for me to really express the impression this picture leaves me with... Most of the time a new deviation will simply feature a character you enjoy and you think to yourself: "Ha, that's cool-" and move on. But this... this is something different. You've done more than make a pretty picture with an appealing character. You have created a window into a fantastic world that excites the mind and leaves the viewer longing for more. Another person might look at this picture of a pony sitting in the rain and think it's cute. This picture affects me at a emotional level. It makes me feel happy. It makes me want to see more.Β

When you can create something that a person can lose themselves in, even for a moment, you've created something truly special. This is fantastic, and I look forward to your future works. Β

Woah...double rainbow! But what does it MEAN??

Seriously, though...this is an epic pic. Shading is never an easy thing to pull off, but you've blended so many different shades with so many hues that this pic is a work of art like few others. Combined with such details as the vibrant, semi-translucent rainbows and the ray of sunlight playing across Trixie, and there's simply no reason NOT to fave this pic. I'd comment further, but sleep beckons to me, and I've kept it waiting long enough.

I regret not being able to do this pic proper justice in my current state, but know that your quality of work is a rare thing. You should be proud of it.

Woah. You seem to have an interest with rainbows and cloudy skies. You really know how to make it wonderful, even if they are an omen to a rainstorm. Of course, Trixie used magic to be to stay dry under her umbrella.

Awesome work.

This piece just radiates a feeling of calm, yet vibrancy as depicted by your use of lighting and shades. What got me are the rainbow light in the umbrella and the opening in the clouds to provide light for the Windmill's rainbow.

As for the clouds, they are depicted beautifully, dark, turbulent and ominous. Yet the light coming in through the clouds reveal their texture and a soft side to all of this necessary weather.

The mountain back drop adds scale and scope to it overall, while the rays of light beaming onto the Windmill from the clouds (and their opening) create a soft glow at the base of it, as if the hill were glowing on it's own, enchantment-like.

And Trixie ties it all together.

I'll just add a small interpretation of this piece here, " It's like making all these elements seem a metaphor for how she was living before Twilight forgave her. Now she may still feel like she is still in a storm from time to time, but Twi's friendship gave her an umbrella and a break in the clouds to help her through it."

FiM-style I know, but I just noticed it as I was describing all of the various elements you put into this one piece. This piece also made me feel better for some reason, so thanks for that

For your first use of rain, I feel you've done quite well with it, indeed. Fits right in and does not distract at all.

Wonderful lighting, shading, and technical observance. Your painting are some of my all-time favorites! However if you moved trixie further to the right and scaled her up a bit, I think that would help with the composition.

No problem!
There's no need to now, since the piece already looks fantastic! I was just saying for future reference, that might allow the viewer's eye to travel across the canvas more.
