Description Osirion; Land of Pharoahs

Pathfinder Companion cover artwork.
© Paizo; Pathfinder.

Acrylic, Approx 13" x 16.5".

Original artwork for sale; UK£1600.

Weapons and spells readied, our heroes spin around to confront the leader of the undead and his minions who are erupting from the desert around them...

This is a cover for Paizo's Pathfinder Companion. Although it appears as a portrait layout once you add the trade dress it actually appears more like a landscape composition - as seen here:

This layout, with it's overlaid areas, offered its own unique challenges.

I wanted a strongly dramatic image, and the Pharoah Mummy bursting out seemed ideal. I placed him to the right, as we (in the Western world) naturally read left to right. This automatically gives a narrative flow, and sense of movement, reinforced by the first hero turning to face the threat.

The focus of the Mummy was then emphasised by placing the main light source behind him, which both draws the eye, and allowed his silhouette to pop the most clearly.

Well ... I can't find it anywhere in the thread, but that doesn't mean it's not there.
This happens to be one of my all-time favorite pieces ... not only am I a Pathfinder/Osirion fan, but, it's also the kind of composition that I strive for in my own art.

I know it's a shot in the dark, but, is it still for sale?

Excellent colours again. I love the purples in the shadows to contrast with the yellows for the lighting. The purple is just saturated enough to make it interesting. Good stuff. Do you spend a lot planning your colour scheme or do you just figure it out as yeh go along?

cheers,

nick

Thanks.

i do plan the colour scheme out in advance, but it can also evolve as I go along. I seem to like purple

OH MY FREAKIN' GOD... this rocks. Sorry, I had to use CapLock for emphasis. You can literally feel the action in this piece.

Also: the girl's left fist is fine. I don't see the problem.

Awesome atmosphere but the sword of the guy seems to be strange concerning perspective.

It has a very unusual curved blade, which does throw the eye somewhat.
