Description This is one of my favourite paintings of a cat. I think I painted it from a stock photo I found somewhere on the net, but I think it really turned out pretty well. I like the eyes. The original didn't last very long. Watercolour, 9" by 12".

Thanks you! I was really interested in painting this one when I saw the eyes in the reference photo. They were a challenge, but I was happy with the way it turned out.

This is gorgeous! Did you use lines? I absolutely adore watercolors but I always have the problem of all of my colors running together and making one big mess.

Thanks! I usually start with a quick sketch (I'm not much good at drawing) and then "fix" the sketch with paint as I go. I generally paint in dry-brush, so I usually don't get those runs very often. Too much water can ruin a painting pretty quicky!

Siameses are such beautiful cats. I've grown up with them, since they're my dad's favorite cat breed. Gotta love the blue eyes.

Aw, thanks! I really love the look Siamese have. I always think they're so adorable when they have those almost-crossed eyes...

I really like the shading on the cat's face, very well done. Don't you think cats have such cute feet?

Thanks very much, and thanks for the ! Cats are really great, you're right. Their feet are adorable (and easier to paint than dog feet!). I like it when cats fold their front feet under their chests - it's completely cute!

Thank you very much! I think getting the eyes right is really important - I think it's probably what people look at first, and I'm pretty proud of the eyes on this one.

Oh, I don't know...I got a "reject" back today! D: To be honest, though, it was an "iffy" painting. I won't bother to post it...it was a human, anyway!

Well, they can't all be stellar I guess. Or it could just be a matter of someone not liking it. That's why I hate commission work. I hate dealing with the people commissioning it! I have great respect for people like you because you do a wonderful job with it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RamonaQ In reply to Aprilart [2006-12-23 08:41:18 +0000 UTC]

Well, I think my subject matter lends itself well to commission work. As I've gone along and gotten more popular, I've started being a lot more insistent about how I'm going to paint a subject. Most people bring me full-body photos - they never think to take a snap of their pet's face. I always say, "Trust me on this - let me just paint the face..."
I did a wonderful painting 16x20 of a woman standing by a waterfall from a tiny old black and white photo - I matted and framed it perfectly. The woman who commissioned it pitched a fit and stormed out of the gallery because the shoes were too dark! I immediately sold it to a gay couple, who were thrilled with it. That's where it belonged all the time; I just didn't know it...

You have a great perspective when dealing with dissatisfied (albeit with no reason!) customers. You have far more patience than I. I just don't put up with it.

RamonaQ In reply to Aprilart [2006-12-26 08:46:41 +0000 UTC]

Well, with the kind of work that you do, I wouldn't think you'd have the luxury of being able to just say, "Oh, well." Your work obviously takes a lot longer than mine! My animal paintings are easily re-saleable, so I just toss rejects into the sale bin and wait around. The people paintings are used as samples or "recycled".
