Description I've painted this boston terrier before, just a few weeks ago. The lady who ordered it requested a larger version, so I repainted it 9" by 12", watercolour; the other one is 5" by 7". So, same dog in the same pose, but this one's just a bit larger.

Original available.

Thank you very much! I guess it's mostly just a matter of practice. Well, that and the fact that I try not to post the really ugly paintings I've done.
I've just visited your gallery - great work; I've always been terribly frustrated by pastels, so I'm impressed to find people who have the knack.

Very well painted indeed, I am thinking of trying some other subjects myself. Time will tell guess

THe backround matches so well with the dog's colors

Thanks! I often go for "blue-sky" backgrounds on black and white dogs, but this sepia seemed to give it a more "formal" look.

Thank you very much! I think that with dog paintings that call for a lot of detail, it's best to try to pull the brush in the direction of the flow of the fur.

Thank you very much! I agree on this one - I think for the formal pose, the more formal background suits it a little better.

wow, amazingly good for water-colour, so solid, like your coffee effect on the background?

RamonaQ In reply to j0rosa [2007-11-05 09:41:16 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! On the background for this one, I just used a wash with sepia. It's a nice versatile colour that goes well with any decor.

RamonaQ In reply to density-tmr [2007-11-05 07:51:25 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! I think I prefer the larger version; I used to paint mostly small, but sometimes if the reference photo is good, I can get a little more detail in a larger portrait.

RamonaQ In reply to DusanMalobabic [2007-11-05 01:20:18 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! I try to pay careful attention to the eyes when I can because I think that's usually what people are drawn to. I paint them first, thinking that if I can get them right, the rest of the painting should be a breeze.

Thanks! I put a little added effort into the eyes. I think it probably helped that I took the reference photo - I kind of knew what i wanted it to look like.
