Description This is an ibizan hound; I've never gotten a commission for an ibizan, so this one was done as a sample, probably from a stock photo. I'm actually pretty proud of this one because I think I got the musculature in the neck pretty well, particularly for a miniature. This is 5" by 7" (12cm by 18cm), watercolour.

Original available.

After browsing around in your gallery quite a while I have to say you must be one of the best er...watercolorist (if not the best) around dA. Drawing is one thing, oil painting is another but watercolors? Okay, I haven't used watercolors all that much but it seems rather unforgivable media (for mistakes).

Bet you hear this a lot but you can really bring your art alive and make the subjects look different. And no, I don't mean the colors or poses but the individuality. Let's pick one species, like cats. Some very good artists here seem to draw the same subject over and over again even though their fur color changes. They just miss something and look somehow, I don't know, like puppets? Your stuff actually looks alive.

I'm a bit sad that nowadays people seem to prefer abstract art a lot and forget the (excuse me) the really good artists. Not that abstract art couldn't be good, though. Sure, each to their own but it'd be nice that some people who take a different approach would get the same attention. Obviously the more art provokes and the more ugly it is, the more it interests the media and the audience. Portraits aren't all that exciting, unless they're somehow twisted.

No need for this but keep up the great art. And sorry for the huge lump of text.

There's certainly never a need to apoligise for a comment like that one. ^^ Thank you very much!
Watercolour is a rather difficult medium - I get a lot of people asking for advice on watercolour, and I can explain how I do it, but really the best way is to just paint over and over until you can get it right.
It's particularly kind of you to say that I make the animals look alive - that's an important part of my work, particularly when I paint memorials. People don't just want any cat when they have a painting done - they want their cat (or dog, badger, werewolf, whatever).
I agree about the attention thing - portraits aren't thrilling, generally, but it sometimes bothers me a bit that the work that gets the most attention in DA is titillating for the sake of titillation or truly bizarre. I've found that while those works may get pageviews, they don't sell very well. No one wants a big photo of a tattooed bottom over their fireplace.

Thank you very much for a well-written and thoughtful comment.

Glad to hear that you didn't hate it. ^^

Even though I don't know much about watercolors, I guess you're right about that one. Learning is probably most effective when you have to practise on your own. A good teacher can give some invaluable pointers, though. Failing is also a good way to learn. Just like Edison said when he finally got that light bulb to work. : p

And are those bizarre butts so great if people don't want to hang them on their walls? Nah, the walls are for different kind of... or apparently "boring" but beautiful art. Not that butts aren't great, life would be unpleasant without one.

Ah! Almost forgot: I researched about these dogs and I was right with the race, but I didnΒ΄t knew its English name and I got confused (we call it Podenco in Spanish).

I've owned/shown Ibizans for 6 years and will be breeding them in the future and that makes me appreciate this painting even more! You've caught the essence of my breed so well and I thank you for representing them with such beautiful work!

RamonaQ In reply to xibleedmyself [2007-05-13 23:04:17 +0000 UTC]

Wow! Thank you very much indeed! They're such an unusual breed, not many people stop to look at thi spainting, but I've always thought of ibizans as exceptionally regal and dignified. Thank you so much for the compliment - it really means a lot coming from a breeder/owner/handler!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

xibleedmyself In reply to RamonaQ [2007-05-29 23:17:06 +0000 UTC]

They are extremely unusual as they are so catlike that they aren't very doggy at all. They are very regal and extremely dignified, but they are very goofy too so seeing them very stoic and regal at a show or out in the field is different than the gassy hound who can smack himself in the face with his long tail haha. I think I love this painting a lot too because it reminds me of the old dogs coming off of the boat when they arrived in America in '56. A lot of breeders are straying from this look but the breed as a whole hasn't changed much in 5,000 years, thankfully my mentor has retained the look, line breeding off of the originals and so this reminds me a lot of what I have now

Thanks again! When I paint dogs of a particular breed, I usually prefer the "old style" as opposed to the newer look some breeders are encouraging. My Peke is like that - very old school. I really appreciate your encouragement!

Thank you very much! It's funny, but I can't draw so I really admire someone like you who has the talent for it. I think with painting, particularly in watercolours, it's mostly just a matter of practice. I look back at paintings I did a few years ago, and find them just awful. Embarrassingly so. The thing I like about DA is that I don't have to post those!

You know, I'm NEVER satisfied with my work. I can always find something wrong with it. Sometimes a ton of things! (Ok, actually most of the time a ton of things.) So don't come down on yourself thinking of the ones that didn't come out like this one. I'd just simply crawl under my bed if that's all I thought about with my work because there's SO much wrong with it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RamonaQ In reply to Aprilart [2007-02-20 07:37:44 +0000 UTC]

Perhaps your definition of "wrong" is a little unusual. I think I've got a pretty good eye for art, and there's not much anyone could find wrong about your work. Of course, you're the artist, so you're closer to it, and after working so long on it, I would imagine that any little thing would just drive you bananas...but those of us who see the overall piece are pretty much stunned and amazed.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Aprilart In reply to RamonaQ [2007-02-20 13:29:33 +0000 UTC]

I think you might be surprised at the number of people who have "critiqued" my work. They have found the faults in it. And you know, they are right in their observations (well, some of them anyway. Some just are bashing for the sake of bashing. I don't even listen to them.) But the ones who aren't bashing are calling it like they see it. So it confirms my dissatisfaction.

HOWEVER, the thing that means the most to me, are the people who can look beyond my faultiness and see the meaning behind it. They are the ones that love the work. I am human and I will make errors. I know this and accept that fact. However, I also know that - even with errors - art can affect the viewers, and I am always so honored when those people do look past my obvious shortcomings and see the work for what it was meant to be. You are one of those people and I love you for it! Your words have honored me time and time again, and you don't know how much that means to me......Or maybe you do. You are an artist as well, so you must.

I truly value our friendship, Chris. It may be an online friendship, but your encouragement, sense of humor, generosity, and integrity is one I hold dear. Thank you for being you, Chris!

...and you keep telling me not to be so hard on myself! Criticism or praise for your work, either way, there isn't anyone else I can think of who can do work like it.

Regarding your last paragraph there - You honestly don't know what that means to me. I'm going through a bit of a tougher time than I expected emotionally, and it's so nice at times like these to know someone is out there who understands how I think and that I honestly just try to be nice to people...that's the hardest part about being like you and I - people tend to assume you've got some ulterior motive.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Aprilart In reply to RamonaQ [2007-02-22 13:48:16 +0000 UTC]

You are right. Touche! We are all hard on ourselves. However, I don't let criticism get me down. If nothing else, it motivates me. It makes me want to dig in harder. Maybe that's why I don't view myself as being too hard on myself.

Yes, that is a shame, isn't it? People always ask "What is it that you want? Why are you being so nice?" They just don't get it when it is just who you are and there are no agendas whatsoever. Perhaps that's another reason why we get along so well. Because we understand eachother in this way. Because of this, I know you truly know when I say something I mean it - I really appreciate you and I mean it! And I know you know that to be true.

RamonaQ In reply to Aprilart [2007-02-24 10:29:10 +0000 UTC]

You always make me feel better. It's a sad comment on society that people are wary of nice or generous people. Lately I've been thinking about how old-fashioned I am. People just seem to be a lot ruder and meaner than they were years ago - it's a world of cynicism, skepticism and suspicion. It's just awful that the ones who remember manners and kindness are seen as the kooks. ):

Aprilart In reply to RamonaQ [2007-02-28 12:55:48 +0000 UTC]

Tell me about it.... I can relate to your statement SO much. Not only have I thought I'm old-fashioned, but I've been called old-fashioned more times than I can count. Naive, innocent, and old-fashioned, that's April. *sigh* I would always feel put out when I heard that, like I wasn't intelligent or something. But my husband always tells me "Be happy and proud when people say that about you. It's an awesome thing! I wish I could be that."

Thanks very much! Interestingly enough, I had always figured that "good" watercolour paper made for "good" paintings, but in some cases, that's not true. Cheaper watercolour paper doesn't hold the paint as well, which can be a blessing. It allows me to move the paint around a bit more, and get backgrounds like this one that would be a lot more difficult with the more expensive paper. Go figure!
