Description Just a little 5" by 7" painting of a Manchester Terrier. I've seen these fellows with their ears cropped and uncropped. My personal preference for any breed is to leave ears and tails uncropped - there's just no point in mutilating an animal for aesthetics.
I think Manchesters look a lot like Miniature pinschers; sometimes I get the two breeds confused.

Oh, he's beautiful!! I agree that the black coats must be bugger to deal with in terms of highlighting--but you've done a superb job of it here! Gads, I just love the bright eyes and focused expression, almost a "I see you getting ready to throw my ball for me!" type of face! Beautiful contouring of his neck and chest--a lovely portrait!

I adore Manchester Terriers, they're one of my dream dogs^^ I love them with button ears, so cute!
Cropping has been banned hear for over 100 years, so I've never seen a cropped dog in my life. I am totally against such cruel practices though^^

They really are great dogs. I'm glad to hear that you live somewhere enlightened enough to ban cropping. It just seems very pointless and cruel.

Looks like you did a different brush technique here, am I right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RamonaQ In reply to Jon--s [2007-09-22 23:09:53 +0000 UTC]

Right you are! A good bit looser than usual, and a much heavier brush. For dogs with short fur, the looser style and bigger brush seems to work pretty well.

I love when they have button ears!

I have a friend that has a natural eared toy Mannie, and his ears stick strait up, like my Cardis! heehee

DreamEyce In reply to RamonaQ [2007-09-24 06:48:58 +0000 UTC]

The Toy Manchester Terriers in the US are suppose to have naturally prick ears. This breeder is the top local breeder, her TMTs have natural ears: [link]

Standard Manchester's in the US are usually cropped, but it's a DQ for the toys to be cropped.

RamonaQ In reply to DreamEyce [2007-09-24 11:00:02 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'll be! Thanks for the info - I certainly didn't know that! I guess with the smaller ears on the toys, they probably have a propensity to stand up. Thta's really cool!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DreamEyce In reply to RamonaQ [2007-10-21 07:27:09 +0000 UTC]

I was told that if left uncropped, standard Mannies ears will go up. The button ears are glued down as puppies... much like most Collies, and Shelties for example. I didn't know this, since I don't own Mannies!

Toys are *never* allowed to be cropped, but a standard Mannie can still be shown in many clubs with natural ears... but like other normally cropped breeds they don't always do as well as the cropped dogs.

The size of the dog has nothing to do with how the ear stands, but rather the shape of the ear, and cartilage development. It's like how German Shepherds have naturally erect ears, while Beagles have drop ears as an example. GSDs ears *can* be drop (Poor quality ear shape, or weak cartilage), but unless they were cropped, a Beagles ears would never be able to naturally stand... if all this technical rambling makes sense ;0P heehee

That makes a lot of sense, and certainly explains why the boston terrier I had growing up sometimes had standing ears. I met a toy Manchester terrier a couple of weeks ago, and he was really amazing - he had that naturally-standing ear look. It was really cool.
