Description Until yesterday, I didn't know there was such a thing as a tricolour collie, but I am assured by that there is. And she'd know.
This is a tricolour collie, 9" by 12", a watercolour commission.

Thank you so much! I was a little surprised to find out it was an actual collie; when the lady said she wanted me to paint her collie and gave me the reference photo, I was like, "This is a collie?" I guess I always just assumed they looked like Lassie.

They have four recognized colours with variance in each though I have to say - that one isn't really the greatest representation of the breed appearance (though the painting is lovely!) I have some photos of my own linked. Most collies have a MUCH more refined face, with a thinner muzzle and much longer ears that are ideally tipped (semi- erect) and placed high on the head rather than down low on the head like a spaniel's. Often you'll see a Collie with "prick" or erect ears - straight up, that is.

Tris and merles and sables are the three most commonly seen colours, but there are also "colour headed white collies", ones with white bodies and either a merle (blue and black markings with white mask), sable (brown and gold, tan or mahogany with white) or tri (black, tan and white) head and some spots on the body.

Link to my "sable merle" coloured collie (not Lassie colouring either, she's much lighter tan with grey blue underneath the tan if you lift her fur, and light gray specks all over her ears and head and back that are not even perceptible until she's right in front of you. She also has silver down the sides of her face rather than the rich browns you normally see. She's a sable variant basically, a less common colour but perfectly acceptable within breed standards:

A good looking "true sable" or Lassie coloured if you like, Collie puppy:
[link]

A gorgeous Collie tri from a dA photo search (no idea who this is but whomever it is - wow. Beautiful example of a tri Collie with good conformation and expression)
[link]

And a blue merle....not sure if it's a rough collie or a regular farm collie, but that is the colouring at least!:
[link]

Finally, a smooth coated (as in short fur rather than long, they come in both types for all colours) white with a "merle" head colour Collie (Could easily interchange this colour with sable or tricolour too. Any variance of the sable as well from light to dark, and sable merles ) Prick ears on this one too, but ah well. Still cute!
[link]

Erm....just in case you wondered what colours they came in that is. Didn't mean to sound like I was lecturing *blush* Sorry I just love the breed so much I love to point folks to information! Sometimes I get too excited.

But if you want any information - I have oodles of links and contact with some absolutely amazing breeders too if you're North American. Also, I suppose instead of linking to dAers I probably just should have linked to the breeders. Aw well. It'll do

But either way - beautiful work! I love your canine portraits, they're stunning

I'm amazed that they come in so many varieties! I don't think I'd ever seen a tricolour collie before I painted this. But in dog shows, isn't there just one category for collies? That doesn't seem fair, when they have different categories for colouration in cockers and other breeds.

TheWindWraith In reply to RamonaQ [2008-12-11 17:29:03 +0000 UTC]

*nod* They actually have two categories in most cases - smooth or rough and from there the division is on age/titles (e.g., puppies, adults, veterans that sort of thing). For collie only specialties they may break up into age, gender, coat types but I don't remember there ever being a tri only category for example. Thing is, there just typically aren't that many Collies IN shows to segregate anyhow. It's not at all common around here to find more than (at most) 2-5 collies - if that - in a show. I took Arwen to 5 all summer over several weekends. Two had not one Collie besides her in the entire weekend show. One was specific to herding group and had 7 collies. Total. For three days. Including mine.

I fin d they truly are a dying breed in a way, through no fault of their own. People just don't seem to want big dogs as much anymore, particularly sweet looking big dogs that are about as intimidating as a 3 week old fuzzy duckling in a tub. I find folks lately seem to generate more interest for big protective breeds rather than sedate ones. Rottweilers, Shepherds, Labs, Weimaraners, Dobermans, Bully breeds (albeit smaller scaled than the others here), Leonbergers, Newfoundlands, Greyhounds even Bullmastiffs seem to be all the rage here. Those are the big breeds I see around. I don't see many Collies though. Plenty of Shelties, a few Australian Shepherds, ooooooodles of Border Collies (they seem to multiply like bunnies, around here - the BCs and the shelties), some poodles, massive amounts of GSDs....but one other Collie in the city besides mine. Literally, our capital has two registered (not to say there aren't some Collies around that aren't registered but all purebreds are immediately when born by the breeders here) Collies and mine is one. The puppies are all in new homes and most seem to be going overseas, to the States, to Ontario where there is a bigger market for the breed (though the purebred demand in general is pretty much nonexistent right now with the way our economy is)

Meh. It's sad but such is life. By contrast though, it makes shows very interesting when you see all the pretty colours up at once!

Oh! That's right - smooth coat and rough coat. I recall back when I was a kid, collies were a big thing in Minnesota - I suppose it was because of the popularity of the television show. You just don't see them around as much these days; they're herders, right? They must be a pretty intelligent breed. We have a rottie, peke, shih-tzu and a golden - all rescues, of course. The rottie is show quality, but not having papers he's not eligible.

TheWindWraith In reply to RamonaQ [2008-12-12 14:36:52 +0000 UTC]

Oh - you can still show your Rottie if you contact the AKC/CKC with a request for a performance number for him so he can enter obedience and agility and rally and all that jazz (we do all three with my girl) but just not conformation...I think?

*nods* Minnesota was/is one of the main areas of quality Collie breeders, still! I'm rather jealous you live there - wish I could! *smiles*

They are very intelligent - enough so they outsmart their owners pretty frequently. They do indeed herd as well, and cart too. But herding is what they were bred to do, and the smooths in particular have a strong herding drive. You wouldn't think personality changes based on such a small thing like coat type, which seems completely unrelated but it appears the breeding lines to get smooth seem to navigate more towards certain traits, a stronger herding drive, stronger personality too.

That being said it deviates considerable based on the dog, owner, trainer etc. Mine is a rough, but we have two titles on her and compete in 4 areas (agility, herding, rally, obedience) and she's so versatile I wouldn't be surprised at all if she picked a few more up like a charm were we the kind of folk that had that kind of time - we aren't I wish we were though, she dearly loves to compete (she seems to think it's some glorious game, and bounces around so much - she's so cute, like an eager little bunny, in the ring. She can barely keep still, her tail is likely to give bruises too, whapping so hard LOL)

RamonaQ In reply to TheWindWraith [2008-12-13 11:35:23 +0000 UTC]

Carl the Rottie in agility?!? Oh, I'd love to see that! The boy moves like a cow.
That's fascinating about the different herding instinct according to coat - I never thought that something so minor would make a lot of difference in their personality, but I suppose it might, particularly as they're not interbred. I guess if you breed a line long enough, they develop their own unique characteristics.
I've seen collies in the agility ring, and they're absolutely remarkable - they positively flow. ^^

TheWindWraith In reply to RamonaQ [2008-12-15 06:27:26 +0000 UTC]

*giggles* Well it was a thought *grin* I have seen relatively talented Rotties negotiate agility before. They aren't swift but they are methodical. Hee.

Here's hoping my girl flows too - she can sometimes be a bit of a klutz. We'll see. Heh. As for the herding instincts - I think it was just that many smooth lines had a history of being worked in herding more frequently and harder and had more performance in the lines and it stayed there as the breeding progressed, while roughs were more the "primadonna" variety that seemed to get more attention, and thereby progressed to show ring conformation more easily and quickly. Roughs can herd too but the personality type seems quite visibly different even in a litter with both coat types. You can really see the difference then.

RamonaQ In reply to TheWindWraith [2008-12-17 09:51:03 +0000 UTC]

Not swift but methodical. Yep - that's Carl.
I think thta's probably true of a lot of breeds that have longer and shorter hair - the longer haired ones tend more to conformation, I think...well, except the dachshunds, perhaps.

TheWindWraith In reply to RamonaQ [2008-12-17 15:51:28 +0000 UTC]

I think you're right! It makes sense when you think of it. The more "decorative" coat type being more likely to show up in the rings while the more hardy coat types with less fuss and muss tend to correspond more frequently to working dogs out in the field. But then again there are oodles of roughs that herd, oodles of smooths in the ring so really it isn't that big of a difference around here Just with the breeding history I guess

Sounds like Carl's a sweetie! Give him a pat from me I just love Rotties, they're adorable

I know, it's strange because I'm usually pretty good about keeping tabs on breeds and stuff, but somehow this one just passed me by. I don't think I'd ever seen one in a dog show, either. I guess you're right - when I think of collies, I usually think of Lassie or beardies.

That happens around here occasionally. We usually try to help them; I remember there was one little Maltese who was in really bad shape (matted, maggots and blind! D and we decided that his owner didn't deserve to get him back, so we got him fixed up and groomed and got him adopted by the lady who is in charge of dog adoptions!
