Part 2 - Spider-Man's introduction into the MCU.

This is something I have been waiting a long time for.

The moment Amazing Spider-Man 2 bombed in hilarious fashion, I walked out of that cinema saying "he's coming home!" Yet to now finally see it was a dream come true. The bullshit that is Sony now firmly behind this character and to see him back at a level the original Sam Raimi movies had him at was a joy to see. While I will always enjoy the performances of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, Tom Holland IS Spider-Man. The mannerisms, the attitude, the humor even the nerdy aspects of his personality. This kid nailed it on his first try. Considering the amount of pressure and speculation we all had, it's impressive he managed to live up to those expectations. Very few actors have the pleasure of silencing their whiny internet detractors, but Tom Holland can now be in the same company as the likes of Ben Affleck and Gal Godot in the manner of the Internet being very wrong about casting decisions.

Now if I can put the fanboyism aside for a moment, as much as I loved him in this movie... Spider-Man was shoehorned into the story. Not that's a bad thing mind you, for if you're going to introduce an iconic Marvel character into the MCU, why not in the film where all his peers can stand next to him? I'm glad the movie wasn't about him, for I remember resident lunatic at Sony Avi Arad, stated "Spider-Man will only team with the Avengers IF AND ONLY Spider-Man is the main aspect of the film!"

Yes, because in a movie called CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, Spider-Man will be the main character.... Moron.

I will say a blemish on his introduction was that Tony Stark conveniently knew who he was without a single explanation. However, if this plothole is addressed in Spider-Man: Homecoming then I'll forgive this misfire. I think by the midway point I began to wonder "when's Spidey going to show up?" because both teams were gearing up for the battle in Germany. Yet you also saw how reckless Tony Stark had become by this point. He was willing to bring an inexperienced 15 year old kid (I think he said he was Spider-Man for only 6 months) Against a small team of veterans..... I'm amazed he didn't get killed! He was clearly in over his head and got careless against the likes of Captain America, Winter Soldier, Falcon and Ant-Man of all people.

But what I liked was Peter's a fast learner and quickly adjusted to the situation at hand. He actually managed to bring down Giant Man and subdue Captain America for a moment. Also the fact Tony made his iconic suit made sense. For as much as I love Maguire and Garfield's Spider-Men, there is no way in Hell a poor kid from Queens could afford a suit that detailed. Seeing Peter's room with an ancient computer and dumpster diving for parts made perfect sense. This isn't some billionaire playboy like Batman or Iron Man. This is a kid who has to make everything with the scraps he could find. Also introducing an aspect of his powers the previous movies never thought of, in that his vision is heightened by his new powers. Making it harder for him to see at times. It's why I feel Kevin Feige understands the character better than Avi Arad ever will.

His contribution to the movie amounts to about 15-30 minutes, so don't expect him from start to finish. Yet those 30 minutes were absolutely priceless and made the limited screen time worth it! While he has a limited presence in the promotion for the film, beyond fanboying over Cap and "that awesome metal arm" Bucky has. The best bits of materiel are the bits you didn't see. I won't spoil any of them here, but it's hilarious how chatty and comical this Spider-Man is. It's something people have often criticized the movie portrayal of Spider-Man over the years, in that Tobey wasn't jokey enough or Andrew was too much of an asshole. Here it's a nice balance between the performances of the previous Spider-Men, while I was reminded of the 90's Spider-Man voiced by Christopher Daniel Barnes and elements of Josh Keaton's Spidey (to show the cartoon voices some love)

I did mention his inclusion was forced, but at the same time it wasn't a means to say "Hey go watch Spider-Man: Homecoming" like I feared. Which is the problem with Iron Man 2 and Age of Ultron everyone has. Both Spidey and Black Panther's introductions had a contribution to the overall story. Granted Panther had more to offer than Spidey, but what they had was nothing short of brillant!

Finally, we saw the second Spider-Man character enter the MCU in a brief scene with Tony Stark.

Aunt May.

From Rosemary Harris, to Sally Field and now Marisa Tomei.... Is it me or is Aunt May "Benjamin Buttoning" her way through these Spider-Man films? I get that if Spider-Man is going to be 15 years old that Aunt May should look a bit younger, but that's a bit much isn't it? From Grandma to MILF?

Interesting choice.

What do I think the future for Spider-Man movies will be like? As long as they avoid emo peter, Gwen Stacy and TOO MANY FUCKING VILLAINS again. Then it should be great!

it did, even if they are both very flawed, and were kind of the same movie in basic bulet point format.

well i hate tobe that guy but the whole heighten vision thing was hinted in tasm. When he was spazing in his room with all the whole 30/20 vision thing he had going on. But dont knock the other franchises without them we wouldn't have spider-man ever in live action. At least they tried i would like to see u try to do better. Also i am not freaked out that aunt may is younger. I think it is absolutely cool and more believable than a 15 or 16 year old kid taking care of a sickly 62 year old lady who is in the hospital 24/7. Seriously aunt may is always getting sick or ill. It was very annoying at times. I do agree that tom holland has got to be the best spidey so far. I still like garfield I dont give a fuck what no one says. But your right about spidey not really needed to be in the movie. I used to think that at first but after seeing him in it. It felt right. At first I was bashing this movie left and right for even trying to adapt to one of my most hated marvel stories ever and made it work. Im shocked it work. Spidey who had short screen time was one of the best things i loved about the movie. He made me understand why i have this everlasting man crush on peter parker and why he is my favorite hero. He is this little underdog who can surprisingly kick ass. Yes spider-man has powers and talents that make him formidable but there is someone who is always stronger. That is why love about him u never know if he is gonna win or lose. He win and loses battles majority of the time. Alot of people even including myself have always underestimate what he can and cant do. That is when he usually wins. His determination and will to never give up. He had beaten some of the most powerful characters in marvel and gives it everything he got. One thing i always tell people who like to belittle spidey: Worst thing u can ever do!! He will find away to win and makes u look like the dumbest person on the planet.

I have little to no care about Marvel films at this point, especially the Spider-man films since the previous filmmakers can't seem to learn to cut down on villains >.<

It annoys me since I enjoyed the Spiderman movies (although 3 wasn't very good but didn't think it was THAT terrible, despite some stupid decisions) and seeing it being rebooted for the 3rd time is just frustrating.

the 4th reboot would have a bunny take over the role, why? because AVI DEMANDS IT!! which should never, ever happen. If tom's taste of spdiey is what we can expect then i'm aboard Homecoming. i'm still a bit caouious.

HUlk and THor have so much more important things to deal than the war...altruogh only good thing of Banner MIA is that he doesnt have to deal with Ross.
Spidey..i gotta admit, i felt it was going to be tricky to include him since Film made progress and i ended surprisingly liking how things went. And yes AUnt May seems to be reverse aging (I know actress is in her fifties but still)...if this keeps going she is going to be a teen mom by the fourth reboot.
The suit part...well. SPidey would have had concepts that looked awesome in paper but lack of budget made it look poorly made. Gotta agree in that point, the kid has to struggle to keep his job, and if we consider how expensive can be a well made cosplay costume, it would not be cheap not just to make the outfit but also mantaining it.

Not getting Gwen is sadly going to be unlikely, what with the writers shoehorning her in as much as possible in the comics.Β

It's a bit of a tired thing by now, but I stand by it: Those 15-30 mins of Civil War are the best Spidey film we've ever had.
