Surprised no one has trolled this, it is amazing! Some would say this is an edited photo, but it is not, this is a picture of amazing art. You used a camera, as I can see, so I tell this was in rl

For someone's first go in pastel this is absolutely amazing. Fantastic detail in the fur.

ha ha.. yes things are uber expensive in Australia also thats why i import!
ok paper the absolute best paper is stonehenge paper.. it is smooth enough to allow great detail but has enough tooth for a lot of layers.. the way i work i put a lot of layers of pencil down..
I dont use any liquid blenders.. but there is a blender pencil i use sometimes on eye areas.. its a prismacolour pencil without colour just pretty much the wax substance in the wood casing like a normal pencil but with no pigment..
Definitely light to dark.. it is almsot impossible to lighten a dark colour properly except on the black paper for some reason.. it has a little more leeway..
Erasing.. i use blu tack dabbed onto the pencil and then i can usually take the rest of with the electric eraser.. though you have to be very light handed with that..
Basically you cant erase or correct mistakes as easily as pastel.. so you have to really think about what you do before you do it..
I import all my supplies from Dick blick in America.. sure you pay for postage but you can get any supply you need (so hard to get things in Australia) and at about the third of the cost in my country.. hopefully it will be an economicla option for you also...
I have a tutorial in my gallery somewhere on drawing a tiger in colour pencil... not sure if you have seen it but it may give you a bit of an idea on the process also..
let me know if you have any more questions! more than happy to help
Naomi

your very welcome.. i had another thought for you as well... colour pencil esp the prismas can leave little crumbs on your work as you draw.. now if you dont get rid of them they will be impossible to remove if you draw over them.. the best thing to do is use a semi stiff brush.. i use a drafting brush and brush your page every few mins.. it just becomes habit.. if you dont do it you can end up with a bit of a mess..
Also with the prismas only.. you need to fix your work when you finish as otherwise a thing called wax bloom happens.. thats where the wax from the pencils comes to the surface and leaves a whitish sheen.. if this happens a careful wipe over the work and a couple of sprays of fixative and your right again... this is only with the prismas as they are wax based...
anyways have fun and i look forward to your drawings!
