Another commission for of her character Asma! I love drawing her! Wanted to wait till after Thanksgiving to post this even though I finished earlier. X_XI really need to work on my lighting though. I can never get it right and all my stuff looks kind of dull. At least I think so.

I have no idea why someone would call her smile "creepy".... I think it's lovely. It gives her personality and makes her glow. Very beautiful work on her. All of the paintings you've done of her are very very nice. The hair and eye colors are quite stunning, too, and the contrast you produced between lighting and shadow works wonderfully on her.

Well, I guess it could be. I mean smiles are kind of hard to paint so it might have kind of a sneaky effect to it? I don't know, I'm just grasping at straws here. Thank you! My biggest issue with color like these is making them looking like they fit but since I'm not great at picking tones yet it always kind of looks too fake in my head. It's probably just me, I dunno.Β
Oh, I was going to tell you because it reminded me of what you said when I did that step by step video awhile back. Yesterday I posted that Tatsurou and Mukku picture on my tumblr and I guess this morning it got posted on this Russian site and there seemed to be a debate (I say "seemed" because obviously I don't speak Russian and had to run comments through a translator) about whether or not I drew my own stuff or copy pasted. I'm just sitting here laughing because someone posted that video and I remembered what you said. I'm just thinking "ok, I challenge you to find what pictures I used if that's what you think because you never will." I'll be the first to admit I used to use direct reference all the time in my older work because I couldn't draw someone from angles I couldn't see, but now I can so now it's just really funny to me. Anyway...I guess now I need to do an in depth step by step so I can just post that to people on occasion. XD Such is the life of a realism artist. I remember once I was sketching on card stock (the really thick stuff) in school back when I didn't even do realism and someone came up and said "You traced that" even though a) you couldn't see through the paper and b) It was the only thing on my desk and c) It wasn't even remotely good. I just stared like he was an idiot.Β

I think you're a very good judge of color tones, really. But we are our own worst critics afterall!
Well, honestly, I think some people just can't understand how artists can be so good at some things and their jealously leads to hate.... (Oh no, I'm going Jedi here) but seriously.Β Most artists use references of some kind - even writers need to really think about how something is phrased or read other books to get a better grasp of the capabilities of the English Language - but yeah with Realism art, it's the worst I suppose.
It's either - your work is terrible, or your work is SO GOOD it must be fake!!!!!!!!!!!

I think your lighting looks very natural. I don't think I've ever seen your work that has extreme light/shadow contrast, but I don't think people would need that if they want to have a realistic picture of their character - the play of light and shadows on the face might be distracting and unnecessary.Β

Really? Oh I used to use a lot of contrast if you look at my old stuff. I wasn't at all good at lighting back then but for some reason I got it in my head that high contrast was better. It definitely wasn't. Now I'm trying to get it more realistic but it's a long road. Lighting is really hard.

Lighting's tricky stuff, but personally I think yours always looks great. I especially like the shading and highlighting on her hair and face.
Dull definitely isn't a word that comes to mind with any of your pieces, but experimenting never hurts, so have fun!

Thanks!!! I've been practicing forever trying to get good textures so that's a big compliment. This would technically be mid waist, but her arms are in the way. Mid bust is to about nipple level. Mid waist is belly button or slightly lower.Β

Well your work definitely shows it so bravo! Oh wow, I really like Mid Waist, when you reply to my next email let me know whether you think my characters would stand out more as mid waist or mid bust level, I trust your input, maybe when you start sketching you could do each as mid bust and mid waist and I could decide for each character which version stands out more.Β
