They're both obsessed with hanging people, they both come from france, pre-revolutionary period, they both wear masks, and they both came from group of gypsies!
Such huge similarities proves just howmuch these two needed to be meshed. Erik's angst mingled with Clopin's exuberance makes them the ideal uni-person crossover! XD

But when you think about it, the premise of the stories is almost exactly the same, though they differ almost entirely in plot. A deformed man living in a big famous building in Paris, also involving a young woman gifted in the preforming arts, and her main love intrest, a weathy, high social class blonde man.
They were written to become a crossover!
