Y'know, I don't know if they ever confirmed it on the show or in-canon, but I always assumed the organic alt-modes of the Beast Era were the end result of the technology that birthed the Pretenders.

With some Powermaster tech thrown in, to allow them to fuel themselves off organic materials (in other words, :eat") like they did on the show.

This is a VERY interesting point of view... Could explain lots of things related with the creation of the Maximals and Predacons factions... Could be one reasonable and possible links between the G1 and the Beast era.
