I was kinda hoping during the time travel episodes that spike would be stuck in the past, then they come back to modern day and bing bang boom spike is now an older and bigger dragon

He's a dragon, which means he's immortal, which means in time everyone he knows (besides Princesses and maybe Twilight who is now ailcorn, but I don't know if it makes her immortal or not) will one day die and he will be probably not that big, maybe something like young adult (the biggest version of his in this comic) when it will happen.Β Β
Yeah, if you think about it Spike and princesses will have to face probably the most depressing fate.Β

This comic, as touching as it is, is not true in the slightest.
Spike has already grown up before. In the episode where it is Spike's birthday, we find out that a Dragon's maturity is directly tied to the size of their hoard of treasure. Spike becomes a fully grown dragon once recieving gifts awakened his dragon hoarding instincts, thus making him hoard items and grow to full size. His love for Rarity allowed him to triumph over his instincts and stop hoarding, returning him to a baby dragon.
This means that he is literally going against nature to remain a baby dragon just so he can can still be friends with the Mane 6 and the rest of Equestria. Meaning that, unless he just decides to leave all his friends (and his fans in the Crystal Empire) behind, he will NEVER grow up.
And given that we don't know how aging of dragons works in Equestria (but with the knowledge that most dragons in other works can live to be millenia old), it's probably safe to assume that Spike will be Twilight's helper until she dies. Or not. Is immortality part of the whole Alicorn deal, or just something Celestia and Luna figured out?

You are right with everything. But you should know, that this comic was made before that episode where Spike growth because of his greed. Maybe with today's knowledge it would be rather the other way around, and sooner or later spike would have to say good bye to twilight. Or like you said even Twilight will become immortal, which would focus this story to Twilight having to say goodbye to her friends, one by one and going with each of them through the stadium of greif only to accept with the last friend, that she has to go on with herself and let go of her old friends.

I know that, but still, the fact that Twilight practically raisedΒ Spike is what makes it hurt so much more. I only learned this recently, though, since I began watching the series due to becoming curious.

Yes, it would give a good narrativ meaning. But in the end it is up to Hasbro itself, if it would mean for them to get new toys out, they will do it. If they see no profit in this, they will stay with what they have.
