Description Weeks later I am finally editing this info to properly, you know, thank people and credit my sources!

Eesh.. so much for my notions of artistic integrity, eh?

Righto, then!

Kit wrote four and twenty blackbirds -

[link]

- and after I read it I was ... *tries out and ultimately discards several overly-floofy-sounding statements about being all Inspired*.. well, I drew this!

The Important part of all this, though, is to carry on to Moste Kindlye Thanke Julia-chan and G&M Aku - without their kind words (and lovingly-phrased bustouts) poor Balthier would still be looking like a day-after fratboy. *shudder*

Also, the Silent Hill-ification that the piece required was made possible by two wondermous textures acquired from Mayang! [link]

Heee! Obviously it's a favourite fanfic of mine as well; and Kit needs to write a sequel to it. (Are you reading this, Kit? SEQUEL TO BLACKBIRDS!)

I fiddled endlessly with the overlay of the blackbirds; it is So!! nice to hear that someone else thinks it makes the piece, 'cause that's my feeling on it. It just wasn't quite right without them; he looked vaguely hungover. Gazing somewhat sadly at a bird that isn't there, though.. yup, right 'round the twist.

Thank you very much for the kind words!

Do finish the game; the ending is quite wonderful! This piece was done for a friend; she very kindly permitted me to illustrate her FF XII fanfiction. While I do love coming up with my own images, I must admit a certain weakness for illustration.. I have so much fun doing it!

As for the piece itself, the style I coloured it in was a new direction in Photoshopping for me; one I'm still quite happily (if ineptly) exporing! Thank you for the kind words.

Nothing to say but YES.. Photoshop is a pain at first! Srsly, though, don't let it intimidate you.. it's only a bear at first, then it starts to make sense, then it's actually pretty intuitive, in a way. Corel Painter is the one that's a nightmare for me.. I just can't find anything! It makes no sense!

This one was cheaty-good texture-fun.. there's not that much actual colouring; I just had to work over the places where I wanted Balthier to cover up the background! Haha, cheating! Ehh... Otherwise - THANK YOU! Man! This was my first really good dogfight with creating custom brushes in Photoshop, and (...erm, you can barely see them, Oh oh! Look at his sleeve.. see? Kinda, a little, the chippy-edged smeariness? That's a custom brush) .. I was pretty pleased with the end results.

I can't tell you how happy it makes me to hear that my colouring style is unique! I try to be different, without resorting to complete and total weirdness. Again, I thank you!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RavenBlakh In reply to razimo [2007-05-19 20:22:59 +0000 UTC]

Ah, i've done that before (sort of) too! Look at this one: [link]

I just used a load of textures brushes and did some messing around with the layer properties and such...XD

Ah, custom brushes make the world go round! Without them i'd probably be sitting in a ditch somewhere using microsoft paint to colour stuff XD

No probs! Ah, it doesn't matter if it goes weird sometimes, even if you just experiment with different ideas and techniques, it doesn't matter if they go wrong because you learn new things along the way and make your art style better in general.

Wow, that sounded geeky...XD

That's so very incredibly amazing . It's a crossover of two of my favourite... erm, atmospheric styles, and you nailed it perfectly. I love how it's almost like slides of reality and fantasy superimposed over one another, almost like his subconcious is moving its way into the foreground, and his reality is starting to fade... Um, well, I'll stop prattling and tell you again how beautiful it is! Amazing work!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

razimo In reply to DJ-Smexy [2007-05-03 03:33:54 +0000 UTC]

Now, the funny part is how pleased I was to get such insightful commentary on my art from someone self-titled 'DJ Smexy' Yes.. on any given day I am very easy to entertain!

Otherwise - thank you very and Highly much! I've said before that I really can't take credit, as such, for the atmospheric stylings; they resulted entirely from the realisation that what the piece needed was Much More Silent Hill - so, bloody, rusty metal it was! And voila' - instant Drama. (Sometimes creating the most complicated 'feel' involves the most simple 'process.' Love that.)

"...almost like his subconcious is moving its way into the foreground, and his reality is starting to fade... "

...and that is such a PERFECT! way of expressing in words the concept that I was trying to get across visually that I.. well.. I wish I'd thought of it! I am tempted to steal it! I won't, though, I only pirate things from people I know it would be rude.

Piracy aside, yes - exactly so. In the story, Balthier is very much coming unglued at this point - utterly exhausted, no longer willing to fight the creeping-in of the madness. Someone pointed out to me that he's even looking right at one of the birds, as if he can see it .... (I had resolved to start lying to people, and saying I'd done it on purpose, but honestly I am equally enchanted with the notion that Balthier, not I, decided it.)

And uhm.. wow, i'm the one rambling, here. Sorry 'bout that! Thank you again!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DJ-Smexy In reply to razimo [2007-05-03 05:58:41 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha... yes, names can be rather misleading. Totally goes to show that you can't judge a book by it's cover

Hah, don't worry about the ramblings. I enjoy getting feedback on my, um, feedback. I too am a HUGE fan of the Silent Hill series, especially the amazing number 2. The moment that game made me start to think that *I* might be going crazy, was the moment that I fell in love with it. When the writing Mary's letter had vanished I had to go and sit in the middle of a brightly lit room and be scared for a while. Anyhow. Long story short, I love all things Silent Hill. Which means I love this piece

And thank you very much I actually do quite a bit of writing, my specialty is descriptive simile. My writing is a whole lot better than my art, that's for sure Ironically, I haven't had the (metaphorical) balls to post any writing yet... Anyway, if you're interested in seeing some, let me know

But yes, I am prattling again and shall stop. Although I definitely prefer rambling, but deep conversation over 50 comments worth of "lol luv ur pic itz c00l". One of the perks of DA, you definitely run into all types here.

And by the way, in case I forgot to mention, this pic is still AWESOME. I still can't get over how well you portrayed his mental and emotional state, his despair and despondency, without saying a single word.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

razimo In reply to DJ-Smexy [2007-05-14 05:48:00 +0000 UTC]

Ordinarily, I don't take.. like.. FOUR YEARS to get back to people when they say nice things to me. HONEST. Man, I'm sorry about that..!

ONWARD.

Ahh, Silent Hill... Did you like 4? It was Good.. but far from Great, and after 3, I expected Great. Otherwise, oh man.. even my horror-loving boyfriend (we played through them together) couldn't handle more than about an hour or 90 minutes of Silent Hill at a time. Once we played for most of the evening.. like four hours.. and at the end of it we were both sorta wide-eyed and twitching and had to play Viewtiful Joe with ALL the lights on for awhile before we could even THINK about sleeping.

/me is interested! What sorts of things do you write? Have they got Balthier in them? I love to read!

As for prattling vs. rambling... hmm.. yes.. definitely a meaningful distinction, there, and I applaud you for recognising it! Mumbling, for instance, is one that - I grieve to state - I am a bit prone to. Muttering, also.. just.. random little sentence fragments..sometimes angry... many ellipses... no real point.....
....

... but you are welcome to prattle, ramble or rant at me, as pleases you!

As for the pic - again, I thank you! I really couldn't be happier with the way it came out - believe you me, it was kinda a mess starting out. The first person I showed it to (Juliachan!) said "Haha, he looks like he's coming off a bender.." Humbled, I presented it to the author's Person, Great-and-Mighty-Aku (she beta'd the story, so was very familiar with the material).. and got confirmation: "Wow, he really looks really drunk! "

Yes, I'm serious.... it was really, really awful... but I did fix it, and I am proud of me, I must admit. (Now.. ask me how many 'broken, unfixable' drawings currently reside in my sketchpad. I'll tell you: No less than six. So.. can' I be proud of myself for getting ONE to behave?? Can't I, please?) Where was I going with that.. OH! Yes! Mental state! I wonder, I must admit, how many people who've seen it read the story also? And if the people that DIDN'T read the story still think it carries its weight well? Curious!

DJ-Smexy In reply to razimo [2007-05-16 01:15:12 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, s'okay. I'm not offended that replying to my comments isn't at the very tip-top of your priorities. If I was offended by that, I think I'd need to invest in getting myself a life I'm actually rather flattered that you considered me interesting enough to extend the conversation thus far

Mmm... SH4. I loved, yet was also disappointed by it. I liked how at first it unfolded like a murder mystery; when my friend and I played, we avidly wrote down the victim numbers, searched out references to past games, etc. I loved it, and it scared the hell out of me!
However I found that eventually it fell flat on itself, instead of picking up momentum towards the end like the other games did. It also doesn't help, that while being a nice bit of eyecandy, Henry is about as emotionally responsive as a piece of plywood Maybe he was just reeeeaally tired or something. For the whole game. Despite all the naps he kept on taking. Hmm.
Playing SH in small doses? *Le gasp!* I should have thought of that. It really would have been conducive to my mental health

Hmm, for writing, I mostly do my own ideas, I don't really know what genre they fall into... I haven't done any fan-fiction yet, but I'm inspired to start now (I've been wanting to ever since I played FFXII ) Will post some sample writing when I stop being so BUSY. Gah.

Yay! Now I feel better about rambling at you I was sure that I was starting to get annoying

Bah, your "messes" are far prettier than anything I can produce Ouch to the original commentary! Looks like you have some tough critics. He doesn't look drunk, I swear.
I saw the this picture first, and easily saw the meaning in it without reading the fic. Actually, because of the order I did things in, I find that the story fits with the painting, not the other way around... Either way, they go hand in hand, yah nailed it!
So yes, be proud. Very proud. Do a little dance, even
And six is not a lot of broken sketches. My book is full of badly-behaved drawings, it makes me sad I tend to be overly ambitious for someone of my skill level.

BTW checked out the nice biiiiiiig version I marvel at how you manage to make it sketchy and yet intensely detailed at the same time. Do that little happy dance again fer me

okay the blackbirds threw me off...in a good way though, they make the whole thing utterly surreal and hallucinatory (is that a word?) and, I'm pleased to tell you, Balthier no longer looks hungover but semi-irate and very, very tired. The colours are delicious. *runs off to re-read fic*

I suppose you could say I'm terribly impressed

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

razimo In reply to Synaesthesiac [2007-04-29 17:44:37 +0000 UTC]

Actually-a-word or not; 'hallucinatory' is a perfectly Awesome whatever to apply to artwork, or at any rate I think it is, and being that it's my artwork in question at the moment, isn't my opinion allowed to count for extra?

ISN'T IT?

CAFFEINE-FUELED, I AM READY TO DISCUSS ARTWORK.

Did you happen to notice that he's looking right at one of the birds, as if he can see it? I actually didn't do that on purpose, although in the future I may lie about that because frankly, I think it's the coolest damned part of the whole piece!

You say 'terribly impressed' as if things don't often terribly impress you! In that - or any case - I am Deeply Flattered. No, really, you shouldn't have!

Last statement is that I find the colours delicious myself, although I can't truly take credit for them: they came from the realisation that what Balthier needed was about 1000% more Silent Hill, and thence came the delightful rusty-metal and dried-blood palette.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Synaesthesiac In reply to razimo [2007-04-30 17:18:56 +0000 UTC]

Yes! Silent hill was EXACTLY what I thought when I saw the colour scheme. I think Balthier really does suit that particular dark, brooding, dangerous colour scheme *experimental fiction calling!* And yes, you are correct, it takes something special to impress me terribly, and this is it...the birds were a touch of class

.... do people on dA like/dislike/hate it when nuts like me find two-week-old comments and reply to them? Do you? Will you send Kaa after me? (Given a whole damn year to make a list of people I thought likely to ever have a Disney Avatar.. you still wouldn't have been on it! I happen to enjoy Disney avatars.. honestly, what else do you expect from someone with a carousel horse, anyway? ... although I had come to associate yo' bad self with Gir, and do miss him.)

(I also associate you with that which some call furry porn. Do you mind?)

Well, now I've forgotten what I was.. OH! YES. You'd had a Very Nice thing to say about that bit o' scruffy Balthier art, and I was highly pleased. The colours brought Silent hill to mind for you - truly? You've played it? (Did it scare the pants off you also?) I lack the verbal gymnastics to truly express how flattered I am that you were actually Impressed to any degree by this.. so I'll just stammer "OH THANKS YOU! " ... and then get to the Other wicked little reason I had for re-finding this comment:

... experimental fiction? Really? Now, you've made the mistake of revealing your Delicious Talent for it, and as such you're now even more likely than before to be subjected to heavy-handed attempts on my part to get you to, you know, indulge the muses.

...... would it sway your hand if I offered you a link to a Stupid Huge version of seventeenth blackbird, that you might see all the nifty little details?
