You're right, they do need backgrounds but sadly the .GIF image format can only go up to 256 colours
If I added a detailed background it would start to look all horrible and grainy because the colours would get all blurred together

I tried to do it and I must say that the problem is in very big file's size. And only in it. But if do all animation in flash with background then the problem will decided.
