Description A quick shot of myself in 1856 garb ( my work clothes) some years ago. Although I have moved 1000 miles away I send my work to support the museum and myself. A wonderful place. The spinning wheel was named Minerva after Minerva Sickler who was a spinner at Upper Canada Village. The wheel was bequeathed to the museum and I am spinning flax fibres in linen thread ( straw into gold !).

No, it is not hard at all. It is sort of like rubbing your tummy and patting your head at the same time. I taught myself with a book from the library and a home made drop spindle. There is probably a Weavers and Spinning Guild near you. You will probably find them through your library or craft store. I know that mine gives free lessons and even rents out equipment to let you get started. They then help you to find your wheel. I have watched a great deal of wheels sell on ebay.
I love spinning. It is very soothing and the wool is so lovely to work with. I have evn had the privilege of shoosing my own sheep and helping to shear it. The following year I got her daughters coat. The other thing that is really nice is using clean carded(combed) wool to stuff dolls. It make the dolls very warm to hold. A more human feel.

Thanks for your very friendly response! I use wool in my dollmaking (in various forms) a lot. Am thinking of starting with a drop spindle, and if I like it go on to the big girl wheel. Happy New Year to you.
