Description Another of my freehand sketches.
This one is from early 1996.
It was drawn over the course of a couple of days- a total of 6 or 8 hours or so if I remember correctly.
It consumed a large portion of a #2B artist's pencil.

Great range of values for only using a #2B!

I love your style! It looks so much like those old 1800's photographs.

I use like a million different types of graphite when I'm drawing, and I still have a hard time getting good values.

It's all in having good pressure sensitivity.

I never really got the hang of switching between different values of graphite and I don't like the way certain values take to the paper so I just found a favorite pencil and worked on developing a very light tough.

It really works well for you.

I guess I got used to different values of graphite with all of my charcoal studies.

I'm looking foward to giving your approach a go

The mystery the picture embodies just took me away. I love that mystifying feel it brings to those who look at it. That's my kind of art, I absolutely love it.

oh, i dont regret it for one second that i choosed "oldest first" when i browsed trough old deviations, this one is really really good. how big is the real thing? it looks really detailed on some places, and with a 2B pencil, it would be hard, atleast for me, to get it that good on a normal A4 paper

realitysquared In reply to ryyker [2006-01-01 15:21:02 +0000 UTC]

The original fits fairly nicely into about an 8x10 inch frame, althought the paper is actually about 11x14 inch.

Keeping a sharp point was key to getting the details in where I wanted them.

It's nice to see someone with real talent... not those people who scan a picture... make it a little blurry so they can pass it off as a drawing... isn't that crazy? I really like your technique. I'm feeling some shading issues, but maybe I'm just going crazy... then again... I'm only 15... what can I say about someone's art work... I'm in the developing stages, but I hate it when people only write... "OMG..."... I really do like the fact that your pictures are photoreal. It gives an aura. Are you one of those artists that draw with the pencil suspended in the air, the only thing touching it are the tips of your fingers? That's the way I am... but really, your gallery is pretty cool... nice to see that there are real artists on this website.
Peace and love,
Jen

I wouldn't ordinarily come back round to make a second comment upon a piece. But I really did not do this one justice. It is as good a drawing as I have seen by any artist living at any time. Particularly the face and the intensity of the eyes and the expression. Your mastery - if I can call it that - of light and shadow and texture and shading. The snake - or asp - is suggestive of the classical. A Cleopatra? A Medusa? A goddess? It is a truly excellent piece, and not a little mysterious.

Great work, i love the eyes and contrast of the light and dark. Did you have a model while drawing this, or was it completely from your brilliant mind?

Photo referance mostly- due to erratic work habits.

Where did you learn to draw like this?
It could well be mistaken for a work of great old master!
Fantastic Job!

I pretty much taught myself (over a year or two). I try not to use actual lines in my work but instead try to convey everything through shading.

There is also a lot of pressure control with the pencil; make the dark areas dark(be careful not to smear the heavy buildup of graphic with your palm) and the light areas blank (a lot of people don't do that) and use those extremes to set the rest of the grey tones. Choosing the right softness of graphic for the job also makes it easier. The HB and 2B pencils are what I used to use the most.

I love traditional art and one of my new favorite things to draw (though I haven't posted any) are people, but my goodness...I have a lot to learn! Wonderful work!!!
