Description

For the past few days, a detachment of agents for the United States’ Department of Extranormal Operations (DEO) had been stationed in an island in the Caribbean spying on a group of “metatalented enemy assets” (internal jargon for “supervillains”). None of them were recognized by the DEO outside of their leader, Winslow “The Toyman” Schott. Knowing that none of them can operate outside of American soil without the appropriate permissions, which they don’t have, Deputy Director Robert Todd contacted The Justice League, an independent superhero team, about the situation. Superman, a co-leader of the JL, had been searching for Toyman ever since he disappeared after the JL defeated him in New York City and then a mysterious team of magic users arrived to spirit him away. Understanding the situation, that Toyman’s new team of villains is assembling some kind of weapon, Superman assembled other members of the Justice League to their Watchtower satellite: Wonder Woman, Batman and Robin, The Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Green Arrow, and their associate member The Atom. The only JL members who couldn’t make it were Blue Beetle and Booster Gold. The assembled team flew down to Earth from the Watchtower and landed in the Caribbean, near the coordinates given by the DEO. The team managed to find the cave system that Toyman and his new team were held up in and they rushed in. They found a large device in the center of a research facility created by the villains, one that resembled a giant jack-in-the-box (which is on-brand for Toyman). But before the team could discern what the device could be, the first of the new villains attacked Green Lantern! Wielding a spear that contained a function that temporarily disabled her Lantern Device and alien nanotechnology, Javelin dove down from the rafters and pierced GL in her shoulder. Then the other villains begin emerging from the shadows, starting with Toyman himself using his magic and Krypton gas hidden in his toys to attack and even injure Superman. He was followed by the power-armored Skorpio attacking Batman and Robin, Dr. Poison attacking Wonder Woman with various chemical weaponry, Tar Pit fighting The Flash, Devilfish battling Aquaman, the Electrocutioner fighting Green Arrow, and Brainwave battling the Atom. Toyman’s magic held Superman at bay while he mockingly revealed tidbits about what the device they constructed did; something about it being a “supercharged version of Javelin’s electromagnetic technology” and it being “able to reach across the planet”. But what this has to do with the magic users who rescued Toyman in the first place, Superman didn’t know or even cared for at this point. At this point, however, Robin was able to break Skorpio away from Batman, and the Batman proceeded to get to the device’s control console to being shutting it down. However, Electrocutioner fried the console and Batman was unable to shut it down! Superman managed to get away from Toyman and he punched the device as hard as he could… and then it happened. The device fell apart from the attack and a blue gas quickly spread throughout the cave facility! Not even Flash, the fastest man alive, could escape the spread as it permeated their costumes and infected them! The members of the Justice League collapsed to the ground as the villains were unaffected. Toyman explained that it was all a lie. That, for some months, their benefactor’s agents had been securing DNA samples of each member of the JL in secrecy. That Toyman’s inclusion as the leader of this team was to lure Superman and the Justice League to them. And that the device was meant to be shattered, so that the gas would infect them with a virus… a virus encoded to only target the DNA of all the League members here. The genetics of Blue Beetle and Booster Gold were included but they were not here, so they’ll have to deal with them later. As the heroes collapsed to the ground, slowly dying, Toyman cruelly told them to “enjoy the taste of Cobalt Blue… courtesy of The Society.” Weakened from the disease, Batman managed to get a call out to Blue Beetle and Booster Gold, who, in more secure costumes, arrived to safely shepherd the weak heroes to the safety of the Watchtower. As Blue and Gold tried to think of what they need to do next, calls came in from associate heroes from across the world. Independent heroes and hero teams all over were under attack from more villains, seemingly all of whom are members of this “Society”! Superman’s cousin Power Girl, the Titans, the Doom Patrol, the Shadowpact, the Seven Soldiers of Victory, the Metal Men, the Birds of Prey, even the Freedom Fighters were being attacked in coordinated assaults! It’s a new crisis, and the mastermind behind this seemingly wants all superheroes to perish, and taking the Justice League off the board was only the beginning!

Notes:

* Skorpio, aka Dr. Dennis Ellis, wears an armored suit with various weapons built into the gigantic claws where his arms are. The claws are also capable of intense crushing strength.

* Tar Pit, aka Joe Monteleone, was mutated into having the ability to transform into living, burning sludge by the Society, using the genetics of Clayface used by Dr. Achilles Milo, who later became Plasmus.

* Doctor Poison, aka Dr. Isabel Maru, covers her face due to a disfiguring accident involving her chemical weapons.

** The name “Isabel Maru” comes from the Wonder Woman movie.

* Javelin, aka Gunther Braun, is a German Olympic athlete who was recruited by the Society with the promises of enough money to pay off his debts to the German mob.

** The name “Gunther Braun” comes from the movie “The Suicide Squad”.

* Devilfish is an Atlantean man who had his genetics fused with that of a monstrous Trench by the Society.

* Lester Buchinsky, the Electrocutioner, wears a bulky suit that allows him to fire electrical blasts that can kill. His facial scarring is electrical burns.

* Brainwave, aka Henry King Sr., is a seemingly normal man with a wife, Mary, and a young son, Henry Jr. But when Henry Sr. becomes the villain Brainwave, he puts on a mask that connects directly to his brain to give him advanced telekinetic and telepathic powers, while temporarily enlarging his cranium.

* The name of this virus, “Cobalt Blue”, comes from an enemy of The Flash in the main comics.
