Description
On the planet Ysmault, a headquarters of the Spectrum Lantern Alliance, the Maultusian people had just finished burying and cremating their dead. Theirs was one of the many planets in their galactic sector that had been afflicted by the tragedy that came to be known as The Massacre of Sector 666. Atros, a former psychiatrist, had lost his wife and children to the assault carried out by the mercenary army responsible, Effigy. He had also regained his memories of serving the Red Lantern Corps, a faction of the SLA, though they were still blurry. Still, he could determine that he was stripped of his rank, Lantern Device, and memories of serving the SLA by the Guardian Council for some reason, and this stirred a vicious rage within his soul. He tread the deserts outside his home city in the dead of night, screaming and cursing the Effigy for his family’s death, wishing for nothing else than twisted revenge upon them. Then, HE came to Atros. A man in a silver mask with glowing red eyes appeared before Atros, levitating on his own power and glowing blood-red. His name is Sorrow, and he is the herald of The King of Tears. Sorrow placed his hand against Atros’ forehead and showed him the truth: The Guardians hired Effigy themselves to instigate the massacre, in order to justify a massive extension of their judicial and military powers. Atros demanded of Sorrow why he is here on Ysmault. Sorrow offers unto Atros a Starheart, a glowing sphere of powerful red energy that only the truly rage-filled and vengeful can wield. This will grant Atros great power beyond compare, and the means to eliminate the Guardians and the Spectrum Lanterns. Atros asked what Sorrow wants of him in return and thus it was explained: Sorrow’s master, the King of Tears, and the entirety of The Empire of Tears, were locked in a “subtle realm” prison deep beneath the surface of the planet Oa, supreme headquarters of the SLA. They need a weapon of planet-destroying strength to free the Empire, and Atros will help him construct it. When Atros agreed, the Starheart’s power fused to him in a painful process. But Atros’ rage allowed him to survive and he became a master of Starheart energy instantly. After this, he constructed a new armor for himself, christened with the symbol of his homeworld upon his chest. When this concluded, Sorrow introduced Atros to three others he bestowed Starhearts upon. Des’Py-Ro, a former mercenary for Effigy, renounced his allegiance to the PMC for reneging on a contract, and now wants revenge upon them. Atros was hesitant at first, but soon enough allowed Des’Py-Ro be his ally. Next was none other than Larfleeze, a former Orange Lantern who, along with Atros, sided with the traitorous Yellow Lantern Sinestro in bringing back The Dark Side. His rage for being expelled matches his greed, and he could clearly see Atros’ avaricious need for revenge. Finally, he have Yrra Cynril, who wants revenge against the Spectrum Lanterns because, like Atros, her family was killed because to them. She had relentlessly hunted them, killing several of them before her imprisonment, and she became known as Fatality the Lantern-Breaker. After meeting his new allies, Atros declared his new name to be Atrocitus, and they shall be known as The Five Inversions. The Five Inversions shall build an army of the vengeful to destroy the SLA and all those who oppose them, and they shall build a weapon capable of destroying entire planets that shall be used to decimate Oa and free the Empire of Tears. And before they left Ysmault, they combined their Starhearts’ power to absorb all the sands of the desert, recombining them, molecule by molecule, into a titanic warship in orbit around Ysmault. This ship, with a massive wall-shaped battering ram on the front, carved with screaming visages of the fallen Massacre victims, was christened their headquarters, “The Wall Of Rage”. The Five Inversions then set course for more bearers of extreme rage to bestow Starhearts upon…
Notes:
* Sorrow is based on Johnny Sorrow, a magically-imbued human villain from the original comics.
* The Starheart allows the wielder to manipulate red energy, similar to a Lantern Agent (though without the Lantern Device and the nanotechnology).
