Description She totally fell for it.
If you're a 90s kid and went to school, you definitely know this one.

It's literally the dumbest, least clever, stupid joke ever created by kids who think they're funny.
And she totally fell for it.

The wonderful, glorious Mickeymonster gave me a hand by drawing the artwork on the three cards!

I gotta say, this is a joke that's been told a lot...but you did real good on doing this one. Real good. What makes it especially are the expressions on everyone's face. As always, almost every panel is croppable to use for a reaction image. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/>

Discord, as always, is a delight when you write him. Great expressions, good delivery, and Pinkie working with him, as always, makes perfect sense. Great work.

As for the art, your lines are a lot cleaner and are really looking less like amateur drawings and more like something straight out of a comic book. Lovely to look at. Also, the full background in the last picture is beautifully drawn, as well as punctuate the joke even better. Loved it!

All in all, great stuff and I look forward to the next one. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

This strip is a very imbalanced. Out of all the page space you have, you only use the half of it and you cram all the set up and dialogue in there.

Also, the first two panels transition weird be because you seem to be breaking the 180 rule. You've closed up on two characters talking and then you swivel around 180 degrees to the opposite side to their conversation partner, which gives the reader an awkward feeling of disorientation. The transition is VERY jarring.

Something you could do to fix this is by using an establishing shot, a shot that shows where all characters and things are in relation to one another (this also helps to establish your setting when doing a larger story. It's very useful. use it.) so when you do things like break the 180 rule, your readers aren't nearly as jarred.

You get it?

I was thinking about critics earlier today; about the rule-sets said critics make up for the topic that they criticize, and how these rules set on artistic mediums are entirely subjective. /endfiller

I was not "jarred" by any "breaking of the 180 rule", and I find your assessment rather unfounded as such.

Guys, this is great! Those expressions are hilarious! The misdirection inherent to the joke is surprisingly unexpected. I like what you did with their eyes. How you have them darker at the top and lighter shades at the bottom without any black pupils is nice. It was cool having Pinkie walking on Discord's body for that one panel. It gives the illusion that there is a lot of movement going on and that fits them perfectly. The series of pictures is appropriately silly(OMG that last card!). How you see Discord's claws holding the two farthest panels (because they're the cards) is a nice touch.

While I found it a bit jarring for the last panel to suddenly have an outside background, I also see that it helps deliver the punch line through contrast and a peaceful setting compared to Twilight's frustrated expression. Also, the background of clouds and sunny day with a very well drawn tree really feels relaxing. It's that contrast to Twi's expression that helps so much, of course her actual look is great on it's own.

I felt the very first panel was a little crowded by the speech bubbles, but it wasn't much of problem for me. There's nothing I can say about the colors or shading. It's your own styles and they look perfect as they are. Any changes would be only that, changes, not improvements. I don't think I could love this any more then I do now!

You can use the Blend Tool in GIMP. You basically take a slightly darker colour than the eyes itself and then you pull your mouse in the directon you want the color to shade. Make sure that the second colour is white and you mark the area you want it in.

Hope I could help you

I think this is unfair.

Why do MLP things always get extremely positive critiques? It's kind of ridiculous. While I think this is good, it certainly isn't 9/10. The second critique is much less biased and people deem it unfair. There is too much positive biased with MLP deviations. Be more fair.

I apply my attitude to all critiques I give, not just mlp. I don't think being a jerk with things I don't like is very good thing to do. I pointed out the things I didn'tΒ think wereΒ well doneΒ and the things I thought were good.

DanielDC88 In reply to MrSpartin [2014-07-13 13:18:46 +0000 UTC]

Giving a less positive review does not make you a jerk.
A critique should be a balanced assessment of a piece that points out and explains where the artist did well and where they did not, culminating in a fair overall score that can be used to quantify a piece's quality relative to other art. You gave very little weight in your scoring to any negative criticism you had for art, which meant your overall score was probably too high. If this is a 9/10, then an truly extraordinary piece of art can only be rated 10% higher than this. I'd be interested to see what real art critiques say about these pieces and their reviews.
I apologise if this seems like a personal attack on you. I assure you, my frustration with this sort of thing is general and not specific to you.

Bongoro7 In reply to DanielDC88 [2014-07-14 14:08:51 +0000 UTC]

I believe that the overly-positive ratings are a result of the overall mood of the show and its fandom. The show is happy, the fandom's overall mood, however cliche and 'dumb' it may seem at this point, shows unusually high degrees of uncritical love and toleration. If it makes people happy and/or jovial, and relates to something that clicks with them, they're much more likely to rate it unfairly high than something else, such as a monochromatic anime comic about death, or something happy and fun that isn't about pastel ponies.

I agree. Bronies are indeed quite fanatic. I don't think people who can't see the wood from the trees as a result should be writing critiques though.
