Description
In 1938, the Internationale decided it was finally prepared to begin making demands for the working class on its own, without seizing opportunities created by the Axis. An opportune General Strike in southern Belgium allowed for a claim by the French to both aid the workers there, and to acquire the French-Speaking majority region.
On July 5th, 1938, France demanded Belgium grant Wallonia its independence as the Wallonian People’s Republic. Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain of Britain announced that Belgium had Commonwealth backing, and shortly thereafter the Netherlands announced the same.
The world watched with baited breath as the two great powers stared each other down over the “Wallonia Crisis.” Luckily for peace, but unluckily for the British, a smaller general stroke broke out in Northwest England, forcing London to turn its attention away. At the same time, the Union of German Communes announced that it would support the French, causing the Netherlands to back down as well.
On July 28th, the Wallonian People’s Republic was created as an independent state. Three days later, the people had voted overwhelmingly to merge with the United French Communes.
On September 5th, the Kingdom of Belgium voted to both change its name to the Kingdom of Flanders, and to join the Commonwealth in hopes of ensuring its neighbors could not abandon it again.
