Description

Following the dual invasions of Czechoslovakia, it quickly became clear to the remaining neutral powers on the continent that they were faced with a choice: Join an alliance, or stick it out to remain neutral. Where Bulgaria chose one path, Romania chose the other. On August 5th, 1936, Bulgaria applied to join the Axis alongside Russia and Hungary. Romania, now surrounded, announced its formal neutrality in hopes this would keep its neighbors at bay.

Following the Internationale’s intervention in Spain and the victory of the Communists there, the Axis decided to solidify the borders of the alliance, along with fulfilling several irredentist claims. As such, on April 21st, 1937, the Axis issued a demand to Romania: submit to Moscow or face war.

A halfhearted plea was sent out to both the British-led Commonwealth and to Yugoslavia. Neither answered the call. Mere hours before the deadline, Romania gave in, and accepted all of the Axis’ demands, much to the shame of the government and general public.

Most galling was the loss of Transylvania back to the Hungarians, who quickly began using similar suppression methods against angry Romanian Rebels to those they had used in Slovakia.

The Bulgarians achieved their long-sought dream of controlling the Dobrudja, assuming command of much of the Balkan Black Sea.

The Russians acquired Bukovina and Bessarabia, both of which were annexed directly to the Primacy. They also demanded the implementation of a further subservient government. Carol II was allowed to remain the nominal head of state, but he found himself ‘demoted’ from King to Premier. His parliament was dissolved and Carol II found himself dictator of Romania, at first against his will, but quickly becoming an adept manipulator of the state.

With most of Eastern Europe now secured under the Axis, and the West almost entirely in Internationale hands, the world hangs on a precipice. Surely another Great War will come soon? Will Yugoslavia and Finland be able to maintain their neutrality? Will the Commonwealth finally abandon their policy of Appeasement, and choose a side? Fear looms across Europe.
