*snort* thanks bro! XD Sometimes those things just get out of hand. But they're fun! ^*^

This is... useful, actually.
Most of these lists have fashionable little trinkets and 'sexy' outfits. bleh.

^O^ really?! Thank you! That's what I was aiming for! I always try to make any of mine or my character's outfits more functional, rather than fashionable. Although I do rather like how this outfit looks. XD And it was fun to think of all the supplies a hunter would need to be protected, and yet travel light and not be weighed down by too many clunky things.
>///< eheh, yeah...thanks for commenting! Sorry for my really long reply. It's just, as a costume designer and since having been trained to deal with disaster situations, it really bothers me when women characters wear clothes that are ultra sexy and are expected to fight realistically, or be able to run away from danger in 6" heels. Sorry again for the rant! XD

No problem, no problem at all.
I'm a fan of functional things as well, although I don't really design costumes.
In fact, I'm re-teaching myself how to light fires with those magnesium sticks again, and have a small EDC.

Still, I feel like people get sort of annoyed when I start ranting like that. XD
That's really awesome! Yay for preparedness! Have you ever used a flint and steel?

Sometimes I feel like I'm paranoid-prepared, especially for a suburb in Texas of all places. :/
I like rants about that, I really do.
I've tried flint and steel, and have had some success with it, but I can make a tidy little fire with the magnesium ones much, much more quickly, and often have one of those on me anyway.

Pah! No such thing as being too prepared. Especially in the suburbs. Where do you think people are going to start panicking first? (no, I will not rant about disasters and preparedness and learning useful skills, nope, no. XD)
Awesome! Yay! Me too!
Bow drills and fire drills are good to learn as well, although they cause me no end of frustration. >.< How do you use the magnesium ones?

You can totally rant to me, I have no one else to talk about the subject with.
I'm convinced fire drills are impossible . This is coming from a girl who views herself as pretty successful as far as fire goes.
The magnesium ones are pretty easy, once you get the hang of them. It's basically a rectangle with a shaving-magnesium-scraps end and a sparking end, and you shave-and-strike at a sharp angle with a decent knife. I don't even really shave the magnesium that much, a bit of cotton-ball-floof, some sorts of lint, or crinkled paper works just as well, and I'm sort of impatient.

Pretty much same here. Everyone thinks I'm weird and paranoid. XD
Yeah, they sort of are. I mean, they're useful for if you're stuck in the woods, but other than that they're sort of a pain. (although somehow my cousin managed to start a fire with one in under 5 minutes *sighs*)
So you put shavings into the tinder and spark it like a flint and steel? I gotta get me one of those, seems much better than constantly getting chips of flint in one's knuckles. XD

I keep my interest in the subject rather quiet.
Luckily for me, if I'm in the woods or even near the woods I will have a magnesium stick and knife, at very least. I even had one when I went on vacation to Utah, although I had to put the knife in checked baggage. :/
I have a cousin who's all weapons and shelters and skill. He actually taught me a ton of stuff, one time when we were camping we made an A-frame and a fire and just hung out there all day waaay into the evening building it up more and making torches because it was drizzling.
That's the basic idea, or you could just spark it if you make sure to always have a bit of cotton ball with you. It's like solid gasoline.
You can get them for a few bucks at Academy, if I remember correctly.

That's too bad. But..er..yeah, I sort of have to as well, or else I get weird looks. XD
That's good! Always be prepared, or something!
..okay, now that's kinda odd...My cousin is the same way, he teaches wilderness survival and tracking and I've learned a LOT from him about living in the woods. XD That sounds fun, though! ^*^
...I'd always be afraid that it'd somehow go off in my bag XD but it seems like a really good thing to have, I think I'll get one. ^*^ I wonder if charcloth would work with magnesium...but of course that's the same as carrying around a cotton ball. It'd be good to research what would catch fire in the wilderness if you're stuck without a stock of cotton balls! XD I know that milkweed fluff and shaved birch bark works. (uhg, see? the rant! the rant has started!)

I know it was kinda odd, and in retrospect it was a bit extreme, but that was several years ago. I was still trying to work out what was the proper amount of stuff to have. We /did/ get semi-lost when hiking, though.
He's probably my favorite cousin. Gave me my first knife (a cheap little Chinese thing, but it was pretty nice at the time)
The thing is, those magnesium sticks /don't/ spark unless you strike them very briskly against something steel, and even then it has to be a pretty specific angle. I've tried charcloth, and it's okay if sort of crumpled up, but the sparks sort of need something very delicate with a lot of rough surface area to catch best. Then again, my charcloth sucks. I either burn it too much or not enough. I've never actually seen milkweed in the wilderness where I live, so I don't think that's such a good option for my case. There are cattails though, and those work very, very well if floofed up a bit. Also there isn't much birch, but ceder tree bark can be crumpled and used effectively.
I'm ranting too, I think it's called /conversation/.

Well, no, not the taking a knife thing that was odd (I carry a knife on my belt at most times), just that we both have cousins that are into wilderness stuff. A nice odd. Everyone should have a cousin to go out into the woods with and build houses out of sticks! XD
That's comforting! XD I tend to keep a lot of paper in my bags, so it'd suck if the thing just randomly went off.
>.< uhg, me too. I've got the proper burning can and everything, but the cloth always turns out really weird and mottled and never burns correctly.
Really? Wow, I thought milkweed grew everywhere! (some herbalist I am XD) Right, like the underbark of cedar?
These are my favorite sort of conversations!

I mean, it's not like I carry a /huge/ knife.
I have modest but sturdy folding knife for my pocket, or if I'm going camping a buck personal for my belt, as well as a larger pocket knife that I can fit in cargo-pockets.
I have a lot of junk in my bags, but manage to keep my little EDC pouch in my purse rather organized, at least.
Milkweed does grow where I live, (in fact, there is some in my yard), but it doesn't prosper too much where I typically go camping.
The underbark, and sometimes the bark peeling off.
I enjoy these too, it's SO NICE to talk to someone about these things.

People always get a little freaked out when they see someone carrying a knife. *rolls eyes* My mother taught me knife safety when I was 4 and I've been carrying one ever since. It's just good sense to have one on you, especially in the woods.
XD uhg, yeah, keep the fire away from the notebooks! >.<
Ah. It seems like milkweed is dying out in a lot of places. (might explain another reason why so many butterflies are dying, but that's a different rant) Very dry semi-rotted wood works pretty well, too.
Oh dear, yes, very much! Although it's making me miss all of my survival books. >.<

That's why I learned not to let people know I'm carrying a knife, even a small one.
I had one confiscated in fifth grade (It was for sharpening pencils!) once, and that was all it took for me to learn that lesson. The problem is I'm so used to carrying them occasionally I forget that sometimes they aren't okay if people know you have them or not. I was visiting the state capitol building and had to surreptitiously ditch one of my favorite knives in a corner and kick some grass and stuff over it because there were metal-detectors and those airport-security things and I forgot to take my knife out of my bag beforehand. Luckily no one saw it and I retrieved it a few hours later.
XD Reminds me of the time my dad accidentally set fire to a bunch of scrap-wood in a trashcan. (Old battery for something was touching the wrong thing at the wrong time)
I thought milkweeds was mostly for Monarchs, actually. As for the wood, I have a hard time finding non-damp sort of rotted wood, and find it smokes too much.
Don't have a ton of survival books, perhaps five or six at most. Why did you get rid of yours?
(Going to bed now, I'll reply in the morning)
