Presenting the Midway Verse U.S.S. Polaris! In the Midway Timeline the Pallanda class starships were light cruisers in service with the United Earth First Fleet. First entering service in 2256, the Pallanda class represented a massive step forward for the resurgent First Fleet. Earth’’s defensive fleet had been waning in power in the relative peace brought about with the founding of the Federation. All that changed in 2233 when the Starfleet vessel U.S.S. Kelvin was destroyed by a foriegn dreadnought. Once again the need for strong independent planetary defensive fleets was felt by the Federation council. As Starfleet retired older cruisers in favor of newer and larger ships utilizing the “Kelvin tech” developed from scans of the dreadnought, they gave its former vessels to the First Fleet and other planetary forces. When the public learned of the threat in early 2241 the Fleets academy swelled with new recruits as many stepped forward to serve in defense of Earth and its colonies. Despite its increased power it became obvious in the following years that Starfleet's castoff fleet would not be sufficient against the rise threats, namely that of the Klingon Empire. In 2251 Maria Boccioni, one of the Fleet’s best engineers, proposed a solution, the U.S.S. Pallanda, a light cruiser based on a design she envisioned during her service on board the U.S.S. Vasilissa twenty years before, but now the newest “Kelvin tech” available. The resulting vessel featured the same saucer frame as the upcoming Constitution class, a small engineering pod, and two generation 5 warp nacelles like those used on the Nimitz class. Mounted on this frame were eight dual phaser turrets and a forward facing photon torpedo launcher. Trials of the class proved the vessels success, and 9 more ships were ordered to be built over the next 3 years, for a total of 10 ships 2259. The third ship, launched in mid-2257, was numbered NCC-782 and named U.S.S. Polaris, after a ship from the Earth-Romulan war. This vessel would prove to be critical vessel in the Battle of Vulcan on February 11, 2258. The Polaris was the only one of the four Pallandas in service by that point able to respond to Vulcans call for aid, with the U.S.S. Pallanda in drydock for repairs and upgrades, both the U.S.S. Aurora and the U.S.S. Selene were performing joint maunerves with other planetary defense fleets, and the fifth ship U.S.S. Anansi still under construction. The Polaris, under the command of David Metlesits, took command of all the First Fleet ships responding to vulcans call. Minutes later all of the ships from both the First Fleet and Starfleet were disabled and facing destruction by the dreadnought that had destroyed the Kelvin. When the arrival of the U.S.S. Enterprise distracted the dreadnought, the Polaris took advantage. Drifting without weapons, sheilds, or engines and missing a nacelle, the Polaris had three critical systems operationable; life support, communications, and transporters. When a team from the Enterprise disbled the Naradas drill, the Polaris began beaming up Vulcans from the area under the dreadnought to herself and the other disabled vessel. Captain Metlesits had realized that Nero's plan encompassed far more than the drill and had convinced his fellow captains to prepare their vessels for refugees, These actions were proved wise when the Narada attempted to open a singularity within Vulcan. Only the sacrifice of the Starfleet vessel U.S.S. Gabriel prevented the outright destruction of the planet. Even so, tens of thousands would have been killed under the pull of gravity from the singularity if not for the actions of the Polaris. In the weeks following the battle the Polaris would help with the evacuation of the doomed planet as neither fleet could afford the resources to tow the crippled cruiser back to Earth in light a planetary evacuation. In the end, it would take six weeks for the battered ship to return home, towed by a hastily repaired U.S.S. Enterprise.
