Description Here is my attempt at a pattern for Midna's cloak. I tried following Viveeh's pattern and just couldn't get the sleeves to work right (they kept twisting around my shoulders awkwardly). So here's my attempt at a pattern. I haven't tried it yet, but I have high hopes! Hopefully I'll buy some cheap fabric soon so I can do a test of the pattern and make changes until it's perfect!

This is awesome! I am definitely going to take this into account when I try to make a pattern for her cloak (lmao what even is her cloak? Strange, that's what). ^-^

It looks so awesome! How long did it take for you to make the cloak, and how tall are you?

The cloak took a LONG time, mainly because of all the applique. I'd say probably... somewhere between 60-80 hours with all the patterning, painting, applique, and lining.

I am 5'9", but I wore shoes that made me about 6' tall and the cloak just skims the ground.

Thanks! And I have another question: how do you applique? Do you just copy the pattern onto white cloth by eye, and cut it out and sew it onto the cloak? And I thought you said you weren't going to paint in the other Midna post. Unless you are referring to painting on the darker designs?

And here you can kind of see how I transferred the designs. I printed them, traced them onto the craft fuse, and then cut that out and fused that to the fabric. renna-mira.deviantart.com/art/…

Yes, I mean the black on black designs that were painted. All of the white was applique. Let's see... the person who taught me how to applique created a tutorial for it. Let me see if I can find it... Here it is! www.facebook.com/media/set/?se…

Hey! Love the finished cosplay! I'm still just a bit confused about how you sewed on the top edge of the sleeve part. Did you sew it to the same spot or to the top edge of the rest of the cape?

Also, do the measurements include seam allowance? Thanks!

I'm not really sure how to answer your question... but I sewed the top edges of the sleeve part to the top of the cloak, and then when I sewed on the lining it finished that seam. It is hard to explain with words...

And yes, seam allowance was included. But the measurements were specifically for my height. It'll be different depending on how tall you are. I'm 5'9" and was 6' in my heels for this costume.

Sorry. I phrased it weirdly... After looking at it a bit more I see now that the cloak folds at the 93" line which I didn't quite get before. I'm assuming the U shaped part of the sleeve piece is the neckline and that's also where you attached the hood. Is that correct?

Thank you for answering and helping me!

This is AWESOME! I'm working on a Midna doll who could really use her cloak already, and trying to figure out the pattern is giving me FITS.

Also, sort of a dumb question, but how did you put the pieces together? I actually put the pattern into Photoshop to figure it out, and I STILL can't be certain how the sleeves attach! Especially since I can't tell if you need to cut one sleeve-piece or two...

No worries! I know it's super confusing. BUT, here's what I did: first, you only cut one sleeve piece. and you place the bottom shorter edge of the sleeve piece along that line that's marked 93" on the big diagram. Then the long edges of the sleeves will hang out farther than the edge of the main cloak piece, but you just bring those edges together and sew. That way there's space for your arm to actually fit in there, and since the sleeves are all one piece the part that runs behind your back stops the cloak from riding up.

Does that make sense?

I hope this isn't a dumb question, but what are the sleeves, and what is the hood? Is the top part of the cape meant to be folded forward, as the sleeves?

Not stupid! The hood is actually not included in this. I didn't make the hood until later. But it ended up being just a rectangle. The sleeves are the pieces on the lower left. I ended up adjusting the measurements a bit in the final product, but the basic shape is the same.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Holy crap. It worked. I probably shouldn't be so surprised, but I really didn't think it would work. I will hopefully have pictures of the mock-up soon!
