Description
Heading back to the club again we were excited for another day of trialing. This time we had a new dog with us, Wick, who had completed some in-home training to get him ready for his first BH! Everyone was already excited, but we were surprised when most of them seemed to recognize that last left turn to the club grounds and were whining and whapping their tails all around. We'll take that as a sign they had a good time last month! And it wouldn't surprise us considering how well everyone did.
Of course there are never any guarantees with trialing, so our hearts were in our throats as each dog had their turn under the judges eye. No matter how much you prep or how many trials you go to, the exhilaration and anxiety are always pecking at us just a little bit, though we do all we can to prepare our dogs for the rigors of protection work. This often starts with puppies and teaching them to 'out' before they even understand their name. With older dogs the key is finding ones with natural instincts like Wick, who already came out of the box with good drive for guarding, chasing, high intelligence, and a biddable personality plus stable nerves and low anxiety. Protection dogs must be well rounded, especially since they are basically furry handguns that are always loaded!
Win or lose, at the end of the day our dogs had a blast as they always do. Watching them streak across the field like devils, put their nose to the dirt in dogged pursuit, or prance at your side while giving you a big happy grin, makes every event feel like we won something.
