Story:
Day One of the AusWBA Trials was turning into a whirlwind, and Kat tried to appreciate each and every moment of the experience. The Ranked Parade and Midday Beach Ride had been a great way to let Silvyr stretch his legs, and become more accustomed to the Australian surroundings and other show horses. Then there was the Competitor’s Buffet Lunch, where she recognized quite a few notable names from the equestrian world. Kat was torn between hanging out, and trying to make acquaintances with some of the people, but ended up scarfing her food in order to be able to get back to Silvyr as soon as possible.
With the Inspection Classes starting in the afternoon, Kat wanted to make sure that she had plenty of time to groom and shine her large bay stallion. She had wiped him down quickly after the beach ride, but wanted to make sure he looked extra ready for the afternoon’s presentation. The soft silky strands of his forelock were rebraided tightly and neatly, to show off the confirmation of his facial structure. And his mane was pulled back into tight rosette braids, allowing Silvyr’s neckline to be seen by the judges. Kat combed through his tail again, making sure there were no tangles or bits of leftover sand in the soft, silky hairs.
She brushed and brushed his gleaming coat, until the hairs were practically glistening. She wanted to make sure he would shine, no matter what the weather was doing. And since the forecast was calling for frequent gusts of wind and bouts of rain, she wanted to make sure that Silvyr had the best chance possible at looking sleek for the judges. Kat had acquired one of the beautiful breed merchandise halters earlier that day, and now she slipped it up over Silvyr’s nose, fastening the lovely golden buckle. The blue trim of the halter coordinated perfectly with his splashed blue eyes. Admiring how beautiful Silvyr looked, she pulled her phone from her pocket and snapped a few quick pictures. Then she put a few finishing touches to her own makeup, brushed out her wavy black hair, zipped up her new jacket – grateful she had something to help protect her against the winter weather – and untied her stallion. It was time to meet up with Occa and head over to the Outdoor Arenas for their Inspections.
___
There were so many astonishing horses gathered around both sandy arenas, waiting for each of their bloodline groups to be called. It was intimidating and overwhelming to see, and yet amazing to be a small part of that very same experience. Kat’s group was called, and they entered the arena as instructed by the judges. Occa was in the same class, with her stunning grey mare Kim, and just having her friend close by brought a little bit of comfort to Kat. Silvyr remained alert, nostrils flared as he scented all the new horses on each gust of wind. His ears flicked back and forth, listening to Kat’s calming voice and commands while also taking in the tone of the other warmbloods around him. He stood at attention, his tail swishing back and forth.
Even as the rain was starting up again, and drops began to fall from the dark sky with increasing frequency, Kat was called to present Silvyr to the judges. She led the stallion forward, walking alongside him as the judges graded his movements. The arena was wet, with little puddles of rainwater, but Silvyr’s footing was solid and he moved with grace. With a prompt from the judges, she encouraged him into a trot, letting him dance with his long longs as she jogged quickly alongside to keep up with him. They moved together in unison and put on the best performance Kat could hope for. No matter how the stallion would place, she was so proud of him and all that they had accomplished to get here.

Yes, Mawson has the most impressively long reins, because I was too terrified to even consider trying to draw Damon.
