Journal entry:
Everyone has been on edge since the avalanche. The damage caused by the giant snow slide has dampened everyone’s spirits. There is a palpable tension around camp… maybe not tension (like drama), but more like… ugh, what’s the word… concern, alertness, attentiveness… caution. We are in a heightened state of caution, for sure. Even I have begun to question my own sanity and decision-making abilities… because, really, who in their right mind decides to stay here on such a dangerous mission after what we’ve just been through?!
Chief Thunderfeather and Professor Mitchell both have their own theories about what is happening to the land around us. I’m not entirely sure that either of them is wrong… perhaps there is something spiritual here that is affecting the physical around us? Maybe they’re both right in their own ways. I don’t know.
I don’t know what to think.
I’m so grateful for Yuka and Kiki – I don’t think I’d survive this expedition without them. I’m sure that I will have to rely on their strength, intelligence and resourcefulness more than once in the coming days ahead. Just knowing that they are here, as part of my team – my own personal “pack” so-to-speak, gives me courage to continue on. And having a few familiar faces helps for sure. Muey and Dukke, and Ollie and Ewan, have decided to stay, continuing on this crazy journey to lend further assistance to Professor Mitchell’s team. If nothing else, at least it’s comforting to have them helping out as well.
After listening to the Professor this morning, I saddle up Yuka, with Kiki in-tow, to help try and find whatever this strange creature is that Mitchell hopes to investigate. We left with a group of researchers, trying to spread out in a gridded pattern, and move through the wooded forests of the Tartok foothills. Yuka was in good spirits, and Kiki was happy to come along for an outing. At least they both seem to be enjoying themselves, and both are healthy – which is probably as much as I dare to ask for these days.
Everyone began to spread apart as we worked through each area of land that was assigned to us. The snow was still fairly soft and the girls’ paw pads moved soundlessly across the white ground. Yuka followed my cues flawlessly, while Kiki ran back and forth inspecting everything she could find. It was nice to see them settle back into a working pace – enjoying having a task to complete.
We canvased back and forth, working our way through the trees and snow, looking for any signs of life. Kiki found some small winter hares, but returned quickly to Yuka’s and my side when recalled. It wasn’t exactly like I expected to find some crazy creature out lurking in the trees in the middle of the day, but I just couldn’t shake a nagging feeling that there was a reason we were out here, searching so intently for something unknown – and possibly quite dangerous – something that could be anywhere. I just kept reminding myself that we were not out on a relaxing exploration, but rather, we were in a remote location with a dangerous mission and we needed to keep our wits about us.
Yuka and Kiki were amazing – of course. They remained alert and cautious, letting me know anytime that they heard or smelled something of interest. Kiki would scout ahead, always staying close by to check in with both Yuka and I, while following any scent or trail she could pick up.
Kiki’s training with scent-work really paid off today. We had been out for only maybe an hour or two, when Kiki barked loudly at the same time Yuka’s ears pricked forward and began to sniff the air. Both girls honed in on a strange patch of fur – almost blue in coloration. I swear, if I had not picked it up and packed it safely into my messenger bag to return to the Professor, and seen it with my own eyes, I would have thought it was a story someone had made up. But I held the proof in my hands – a strange patch of fur that was a stunning, shimmery lilac blue.
Seriously, what in the heck kind of creature lives out here?!
I don’t know if I’m scared, or excited, any more… maybe both?!? I think it’s fair to say that the Professor’s enthusiasm is becoming quite catching – because I really want to see this through. Whether we find a pack of wild Tokotas, or a whole new species of creatures, I want to know what has been hiding from us all of this time.
Yuka and Kiki helped me finish scouring our grid of land for any signs of life, and I managed to pick up a few odds and ends to bring back to camp. I’ve left everything with the research team, as have many of my teammates, and now we eagerly await to hear their interpretations and results of our findings.
I think everything has begun to catch up with me, and I’m probably going to call it a night early tonight… no bonfire for me (not that anyone else is feeling frivolous either – as I’ve noticed the campgrounds seems very still and quiet tonight). I desperately need a good night’s sleep, so I can wake up ready to handle whatever our next task will be tomorrow. Just need to do one last check on the girls – and make sure their bunkered down for the night – and then it’s time to sleep.
Good night Journal.
RL is kicking my bootie & I am way behind on this event (only having the Prologue done at this point)... but hope I can catch up over the next month or two (depending on how long this event runs, of course). In the meantime, here's a completely out-of-order-according-to-my-storyline Collection Quest to try and help Team Mitchell collect some more fur bits.
