Under Sura’s care and attention, Neisha was recovering nicely from her near-drowning transformation experience. As her body and mind grew stronger, her strength returned and they were able to travel back to their home, the Tsula Tribe, in the Kuniak Mountains. It was there, surrounded by friends and family, that Neisha was able to make a full recovery.

But the experience had left its mark – and a small amount of concern and unease began to grow in Neisha’s mind. She had never contemplated her death before, but now she was acutely aware that she was not invincible, and there would come a time when she would no longer be around to protect Sura and be at her side. The two of them spent so much time together, exploring on new adventures. Neisha hated the thought of Sura going out on explorations alone.

It was time for things to change. Neisha needed to impart her wisdom and knowledge to an heir, someone who could continue to explore with and protect Sura when Neisha was no longer able to. And while Neisha knew there was plenty of time – she was not going anywhere now – she realized that the training of another Tokota needed to begin as soon as possible.

The decision was not a difficult one, as one particular pup stood out in her mind. There was a gorgeous, lilac, longmane pup who had recently joined the pack – Ataneq (or ‘King’ as Sura often called him). Even at his young age, Neisha had already noticed how much he seemed to enjoy accompanying them on long outings – and he appeared to have an innate sense of direction, awareness of surroundings, and ability to detect danger. He would make a fine travelling companion for Sura when… when… when the day would come that Neisha could barely even begin to think about.

So, the next morning as Sura was preparing her gear for a short exploration, Neisha herded King – pushing him gently until he stood in front of Sura. Neisha sat, planting herself behind him as she looked at Sura expectantly.

“What do you want girl?” Sura asked looking back and forth from Neisha to King. “I take it you want him to come with us on our adventure today.”

Sura leaned over, releasing her pack, and with one hand on each Tokota began to pet them both. King leaned into Sura’s gentle touch, enjoying the attention as her hand worked its way through his long mane fur. He was still quite young, and moved all around like an excited pup as Sura petted him. Neisha continued to stare at Sura, as her handler also stroked her neck fur, trying to communicate just how much she wanted the happy-go-lucky lilac longmane pup to join them today.

“Well,” Sura continued, “it is just going to be a short expedition to the base of the Superiors, so we can enjoy the Big Aspens and maybe get a few pictures. I imagine King won’t have any trouble keeping up with us.“ She looked back over at the excited youngster, and continued, “but I expect you to take him under your wing and keep him safe if we run into any problems… can you do that for me girl?” Neisha stood up, wagging her tail excitedly, at Sura’s response.

Sura finished grabbing her pack and the trio headed out on their expedition. They travelled at a leisurely pace as they headed towards the Superiors. King started the journey by running off and smelling each and every random thing that caught his attention, before darting back to Neisha’s side as Sura worked on his recall. But the incessant back-and-forth play began to catch up with him, and after their last stop for a quick drink from a local stream, King seemed to understand that he needed to save his strength, and he settled into a comfortable pace alongside Sura and Neisha.

“I think he’s starting to get it, girl…” Sura said as she looked over and patted Neisha’s neck…
