Thanatos in the Cavitto Monthly ContestMay Theme: Commitment
What am I committed to... well, my personal goal this year is to enter one of my Cavitto's into each and every month's competition, to show my horses some love/attention, and let everyone know how committed I am to this fun and fabulous group. And what better way to do that, than to have an advertisement poster that gives all my Cavittos some love (plus a few others I adore), and show (hopefully) encourage others to check out this group.

Thank you so much. It was one of those times where I knew instantly when I saw the reference image exactly which character and situation I wanted to use it in. It sort of just clicked into place for me - the strength and determination actually came through in my drawing (at least better than most of the emotions I try to capture). I'm really delighted to hear that is shows through to you, also.
The highlights were really a bit of a stretch for me. I don't usually choose such bold colors. But I've seen some amazing artists using strong/specific colors in their highlighting, and really liked the effect, so decided to go ahead and give that a go as well. Using something to represent Olympus (above) and Hades (from below) was a great opportunity to play with strong colors (especially that red).

And you should still totally enter - Thanatos has already won (back in January)... so I just enter for the fun of it every month now. It's mainly a way to keep my horses active/loved, while supporting the group.
I would love to see some of your fab Cavittos in this month's entry!

Thank you so much! I'm still learning about how to use environmental colors to add to highlights/shading, and it's a little scary to put such strong colors down on my horse - but I was pretty happy with how it all turned out.

Omg, this is awesome, I love Art Nouveau and combined with your gorgoeus stallion it is totally win.
The pose and compositon are stunning and I love the dark and storm-like color scheme you have used here.
And the idea of putting other Cavittos in frames - it is genius and looks beautiful! Yay for my Thyella being there also!
The poster idea is so cool and I have to praise your skills of making such great looking layouts.

Hahaha, I'm not sure that I would say I have great looking layout skills - but it means a lot to me that you think so. I had fun with this one... I was trying to find a way to combine a plain background, that highlighted the horses shown (both Thanatos and all of the portrait images in the Nouveau circle), while still having the heavenly clouds of Olympus above, and a stormy "indication" of Hades below. I tweaked the background far more than I should have trying to make all the pieces come together, but was happy when I got this finally. And of course, I wanted to make it look as awesome as possible... which meant I HAD to use your wonderful texture stock!

I am really glad you have this personal commitment - because it means that we can enjoy seeing your beautiful Cavittos each month! 
I have wanted to do something art nouveau-ish for a long time and I had a really cool "ruler" (not sure what else I could call it - a template?) with different sized of circles which I thought I could use to make frame like this but I cannot find it anymore! I rarely lost stuff but this dang ruler has gotten lost without a trace.

Oh, I think I know exactly what you are talking about, regarding the template with different sized circles. I remember some of my friends in art class had a few different varieties of those. I really do hope you find it... I would just be over the moon to see something art nouveau-ish in your style!

Of course Amara is there - I adore her! I was going to draw everyone's horses at first - but then, (1) I ran out of time and (2) realized that with as small as each portrait was, they had the best chance of being recognized if I used their existing refs/artwork.
I do find working on Thanatos to be almost therapeutic (not even sure what it's therapeutic from - just so relaxing and therapeutic). ♥ And I wanted to show both him, and the group, some luvin'. So this month's contest seemed like the best way to do that.
