It's really cool but I hate to be the bearer of bad news... despite common misconception, the caduceus doesn't represent medicine. The Rod of Asclepius does. They look very similar but aren't the same thing. The Rod of Asclepius has only one serpent around a staff.

If the caduceus is a vector file why can't I open it in Illustrator?

It's a photoshop vector shape. You need to load it into photoshop first. Here's my tut for loading PS shapes: [link] After it's loaded, you can save the path out to Illustrator or you can just copy and paste the shape into Illustrator.

Ha... it's not a file that you can open by clicking on it. I have a tutorial posted which walks you through the steps: :thumb112107416: click the download button to view the movie in your browser. It should answer your questions on how to open and use them. (you actually load them from within photoshop). Hope it helps!
