Hey long time, don't even know if you still visit these parts.
Not sure if you remember me.

anyways. I've been taking a photography lighting class as part of a BVA, and i'm supposed to present a series of different lighting set ups for assessment. And I've been thinking for the last couple weeks about this image. I would love to try and recreate this scene.

i genuinely hope you are well. x

First off, I loooove your paintings. I was going through your gallery and just had to stop at this one. I love it. I love it because it's obvious that there is a story behind it and even though there's NO evidence of what I'm assuming, I can't help but feel passionately about it.
From the very moment I saw this I was drawn to the man on the right. His face is completely left out because there are so many horrible emotions that he is just left feeling invisible. Kind of like how you realize your entire life just crumbled into dust, you have that blank face? Well instead of showing this blank look to allow the audience to interpret it as indifference, he's cut out of the picture, lost, resembling his feelings just by being cut out.

The woman is very, very close to him. Either his girlfriend or his wife or just an extremely close friend. Her face is illuminated because that is what he is seeing: her face. It's illuminated because she is everything to him, she is the focus of this picture. Also, she's in her underwear, as the sharp contrast of the bra puts focus on that too. Therefore, the focus of the distraught man is this woman who is close to him, who is in her underwear... with a man lying next to her.

The man on the left is turned away. His face is in shadow because it does not matter who it is, he is a strange man laying there in his underwear next to the woman...

That man probably opened the door and saw two sets of legs in there and just dropped his hand, letting the door open the rest of the way, watching his life crumble before his very eyes. He probably never expected this to happen.

But really, it looks so innocent, like they were just really hot and fell asleep next to each other. Still, I can't help but just feel for that man on the right like his heart is just breaking!

Hey man, soooo sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Things went a little haywire with that last DD and it also happened to coincide with a deluge of freelance work so I'm still getting around to responding to everyone.

I love your interpretation of the painting. I started this series specifically as a way for people to create the stories in their head - to finish the narrative and become a part of the art-making process. You're description is wonderful and very welcome. My hope is that everyone who sees these paintings will do the same thing - finish the story in their heads.

Thank you.

When I first looked at it, I thought "father" (for the mystery man.) But he seems a bit young, and the couple seems a bit old for that scenario, if that makes sense. The picture on the wall lead me to believe the couple isn't a part of an affair, unless it is that the mystery man is a twin. Maybe in that case, she didn't know she was having an affair. Perhaps she didn't even know about the twin. (The twin could have been put up for adoption and just now found his brother, and in turn, found his brother's wife.) But then, the mystery man doesn't seem too shocked at what he sees, so that just leads to even more thinking....For some reason, though, I just can't imagine the man as a stalker or murderer or anything of that nature. I really see him as a relative or friend.

haha Wow, it's not often I put this much thought into a piece of art. And not to mention how well done it is!

Can I just tell you that it was a joy to read your thoughts. I love all the possibilities you listed and love that you took the time to think about them even more!

If you'd like to know a little bit of trivia about this piece, it's from an unfinished series I was doing based on a love triangle between 2 twins and a woman! So your musings were not far off at all!!! Craziness. You get the gold star for today.

ThereΒ΄s one problem with this, is so much photographic, so a lot of people may not look the work just guessing thatΒ΄s just a photo.

Lol, I get that reaction from time to time but it's just because it's been reduced in size so much from the original. There's no denying that it's a painting when you see it in person.

I love how the lighting guides the eye to see the couple first and then the disappointed/angry husband at the door!

The fact that you included a picture of a couple between the couple and the mysterious man tells me he is her husband.

Oh... and the guy in the bed is his brother!

An affair between the man in the bed and the man in the door, or the woman in the bed and the man in the door? Questions questions.

Ooo...I have a story!
The guy at the door is the sleeping guy's bestfriend who's accustomed to walking in the couple's apartment uninvited because they're all really good friends.

He was calling out for his bestfriend as he walk towards the bedroom and stopped in his track when he saw the both of them sleeping.

His heart beat suddenly faster when he saw the woman -his bestfriend's wife- half naked right in front of him. All sorts of sinful thoughts raced through his mind as he is unable walk away, frozen to the floor all the while knowing fearfully that her eyes might flutter open and catch him in a split second.

He never realized just how beautiful she was till now and silently cursed his bestfriend for not appreciating her as much as he should.

After tonight, things will never be the same between the 3 of them.

Oh and btw, the watercolouring's allright.

Lol....just kidding. It's too awesome for words!!

Oh i like this interpretation. Best friends eh? I did have a few paintings planned after this one that I never got around to finishing but I'm sure if you saw them you'd build upon your love triangle story even more! I dig it.

And yeah - my watercolors are alright - they could be better, lol.
