Description I wanted to design a small, family owned dying factory in medieval times, powered by waterwheels. I dont believe anything like this existed and there is very little reference about the trade, so nearly all of what you see is fictional.
The family makes their own red dye from the abundance of berries on their estate, and uses the waterwheels to elevate water into the building through a series of halfpipes, and drain the water back into the river after it has been used for washing fabric.
In medieval times the fabric dyers would soak fabric in giant vats of dye, and constantly stir it with big wooden sticks; I designed a low tech mechanism powered by the same waterwheel to stir the fabric in the vats in a similar fashion as it would have been done manually.
Historically, fabric dyers had a very dangerous job, as their work consisted not only of washing and dying the fabrics, but of making the dyes and inks themselves out of plants and berries - many of which were lethal if handled, inhaled or ingested. Regardless, they were still paid very little.

Very cool scene! Maybe fictional, but this is a very believable looking place. I feel like I'm a bird sitting on a pole nearby and observing.

This is a lovely piece, showing an everyday and humble, yet quietly beautiful, part of a medieval fantasy world. I love the little touches of life throughout, the birds arising from the rooftop in the background, the plump sleek fish with resemble Japanese koi in the river. And the invitingly quaint cottages and bridge. Beautiful.

Well, water mills did exist and dyes did exist. At the same time, I've never heard of them being used together but at the same time again, I don't know much about the dying industry.

At the same time AGAIN again, the Medieval period is a very long time. It could've existed at one part of it and not the part before.

RhysGriffiths In reply to RelativeEquinox [2015-02-08 17:28:22 +0000 UTC]

Who knows what existed in that crazy time period?
Probably a lot of crazy things that were made as once off inventions and were destroyed over time never to be recorded or seen again..

RelativeEquinox In reply to RhysGriffiths [2015-02-08 17:42:03 +0000 UTC]

Destroyed? What makes you say that ^o-o>?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RhysGriffiths In reply to RelativeEquinox [2015-02-08 18:34:18 +0000 UTC]

I imagine plenty of buildings, texts, artifacts etc from Medieval times never made it to the 21st century - don't you think? And those that were recorded were probably the most significant and widespread. There are probably a lot of cool things that existed (foods.. buildings.. texts) that we will never even know about.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RelativeEquinox In reply to RhysGriffiths [2015-02-08 18:45:37 +0000 UTC]

That's true. Lots of destruction, especially in the Mid East where cultures would attempt to wipe each others' influence out when they fought (ex 1453, Constantinople; ever wonder why there's no Greek fairy tales?) That and some records never written.Β

It's a shame, really, how pre-Industrialization (or maybe pre-Printing Press) was so fragile unless it was so powerful.Β
