Description The Great Northern Railway introduced the “Atlantic” 4-4-2 steam locomotive (at least as a tender engine) to the UK in 1898 when its own Doncaster Works built “Klondyke” Nº 990 «Henry Oakley» under Henry Ivatt’s direction. «Henry Oakley» was joined by 21 sisters, but the “small boiler” Atlantics were soon replaced on the production line by the more capable and numerous “large boiler” (later LNER C1) Atlantics. After the 1923 Grouping, «Henry Oakley» became LNER C2 Nº 3990, which was retired in 1937 and returned to her GNR livery ahead of donation to the LNER museum in York in 1938. By then, Gresley Pacifics were the top express passenger power on the East Coast Main Line, but the Atlantics still had a few more years left. The locomotive has toured around the UK, both in steam and static, but was back in York when I visited the National Railway Museum on my latest trip to the UK.
