Description Like many immigrants, German-born actress Marlene Dietrich became an ardent patriot for her new homeland after moving to the United States in the 1930s, using her fame to publicly oppose fascism before World War II and to sell war bonds immediately after the USA joined the Allies in 1941.  After gaining American citizenship, which she helped other Europeans fleeing the war and Holocaust obtain, she joined the United Service Organization (USO) to entertain the troops, often getting as close to the front lines as possible in Britain, Algeria, Italy and France.  She was even involved in some covert operations, singing "Lili Marleen" for the OSS (WWII CIA equivalent) to smuggle to Axis troops.  After the war, she was awarded the American Medal of Freedom and the French Legion of Honor, and went from film acting to cabaret performance.  Three of Marlene Dietrich's outfits, including a USO uniform, are displayed at the Imperial War Museum of the North (IWM North) in Manchester, England.
