Description As the prehistoric gallery has been temporarily closed for renovation, the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History moved several fossils, such as this cast of a Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton, to a temporary exhibition on the second floor.  The temporary T. rex display is titled "What do fossils reveal about Tyrannosaurus?" and describes its characteristics and lifestyle.  Once thought of as a slow, fat scavenger with useless arms, it is now more commonly depicted as a muscular runner whose entire body, from its keen senses to its strong arms to its fanged mouth, was well evolved to make it North America's apex predator.
