Description It's been a while since I drew Judge Dredd - but @2000AD on twitter is holding a contest - and this is my entry. I drew this pretty quickly - and from memory - so I went for a mix of the comic and movie styles for the costume. (The new movie is excellent by the way - highly recommended!)

I've been concentrating on drawing Star Wars characters recently - but I grew up reading Judge Dredd in 2000AD (the galaxy's greatest comic) and would love to have an opportunity to draw something to appear in it. Who knows - maybe one day!?

Wow, I wish my stuff that I draw quickly and from memory would come out half as well as this. Seriously. The hybrid uniform looks so nice and deliciously sleek. I wanna touch it...

Thanks Naomi. I see you're a big Dredd fan - so I'm pleased you approve of me taking liberties with his sacred costume!
And don't feel too bad if how you draw doesn't come out how you want it to - yet. I usually feel the same way too - but there's an easy way to get better... just keep drawing!

Sacred costume to the fans, certainly. Although I reckon changing it towards the 2012 style would reel in the non-initiated, who get turned off by the more garish costume!

I confess that my crime is not drawing enough at the moment. I appreciate your encouragement

Very perceptive comment about the costume. I do like the original and can see why they keep it though - it tells you a lot about the character and the society he lives in. Its over-the-top imperialistic, militaristic accessories let you know that the Judges are in charge and they're not trying to be approachable... but it's just so time-consuming to draw!

Yes, all those golden eagles dangling everywhere really shouts "AMERICA! F*** YEAH!" in your face, doesn't it? It is a sodding tough one to draw, though.... damn you Ezquerra, damn you! *shakes fist*

Great Job bro! Best of luck on the contest! Ive never been a huge Dredd fan minus his Batman teamups but I would love to see you do something in 2000AD!

Thanks Jean! hope all's good with you? I remember those team ups! - I think the most interesting thing was they really showed how much Dredd's character isn't like other 'superheroes'. I get the impression he's very much a 'take him or leave him' kind of character.

Very, very cool man.
I remember reading the 2000AD comics when I was a young fella and I really enjoyed Dredd then. The new movie surprised me with how much I really enjoyed it as well.

Top work as per usual.

Cheers Simon. I visited Oz once, a long time ago, great place AND they sold 2000AD in the newsagents... I was amazed to find that this little British comic had an audience in Australia!

I was well impressed with the movie too - such a relief that it was light-years better than the Stallone effort

Yeah, they still do man. That and I think it's the Beano comics are quite common still.
I haven't bought one in years though

I was initially hesitant with the movie, the Stallone one left a bad taste in my mouth years ago... but damn did it rock!

I think Dredd has always had trouble transferring to the US - even though he's modeled on Dirty Harry and his story is set in (future) America. I may be over-analyzing here but I wonder if, from an American perspective, he comes over as a fascist and maybe even a kind of piss-take of that Dirty Harry 'shoot first, ask questions later' attitude?

MARR-PHEOS In reply to Robert-Shane [2013-02-10 21:50:17 +0000 UTC]

i can talk for myself in this and tell you i've always thought he was a fascist and somewhat an asshole lol, although that may be in part to my nwa way of thinking about police haha. having said that this new movie was cool.

Robert-Shane In reply to MARR-PHEOS [2013-02-11 21:23:23 +0000 UTC]

Thing about this is that I think the fascist part is intended to be satirical. Dredd was created in the '70s when we had all those dystopian ideas about the future - and Dredd's character was supposed to symbolize where America might be headed (from a British point of view)...

As you could probably guess, the song is about Mr. Judge Dredd, and is my favorite Anthrax song. You can find a live version (recorded in Dallas in the late 1980's with Joey Belladonna on vox) on the EP of "I'm The Man."
