Description "There's a reason I'm known as the Kindly One..."

Born in Athens in 1926, Helena Kosmatos grew up in an age of prosperity for Greece.  Four years earlier, the Kingdom had won a war against the Turks which saw them reclaim the north and western coasts of Asia Minor, and finally reclaim Constantinople after the Ottomans conquered it in 1453.  King Georgios II was on the throne, and things seemed to be going well and easy, especially with women finally getting the right to vote.  Yet all that was about to change one black day.  In 1941, when Helena was 15, the Nazis invaded and brutally occupied Athens.  Her father, a soldier in the king's army, died fighting the Germans, and to add insult to injury, her brother, Michael, joined the movement to collaborate with the Germans.  This was an act of betrayal in its own right.  For centuries, Helena's family had been Hellenic Polytheists who remained underground, so as to avoid being persecuted by both the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic Church.  They were able to have a sigh of relief under the Ottomans, though, and they wanted to keep it that way.  Now, however, Helena was angry and afraid, as she knew the fate that would await her, having heard all the horror stories of what the Nazis did to the Jews and anyone who didn't follow their "racial standards".  Then, her mother, heartbroken by Michael's betrayal, died in her arms.

With no family left she could rely on, Helena fled Athens, to the Peloponnese.  The majority of Greece was ruled by the Italians, who were more tolerant compared to the Germans, and did not get along well with them and the Bulgarians.  Yet the anger of Michael's betrayal seethed within Helena.  She made her way to the city of Elis, and from there to the ruins of the temple of Hades.  Once inside, she screamed at the heavens, cursing the Nazis for their invasion, cursing Hitler for his monstrous nature, and cursing her brother above all, for betraying their family.  She didn't know it, but she invoked an ancient curse that hadn't been uttered in years.  The ground opened up, and there she saw Hades: God of the Underworld, accompanied by Persephone: his loving queen.  Hades explained that the Gods of Olympus demanded justice against the German barbarians, for their terrible crimes against the entire world, and that Michael's betrayal would need answering.  Naively, Helena offered to be the agent of vengeance against all Nazis, to ensure Greece's freedom.  And so, Helena Kosmatos was reborn as Fury: the bane of all murderers, deceivers and traitors.

Blessed with eternal youth by Hebe, superhuman physiology from Hercules, and the power of flight from Zeus, she was also given a fine suit of armor from Hephaestus, and Athena trained her how to fight with a whip, spear, sword and shield.  Yet there was a snag: her rage was also enhanced to the point that she went berserk.  During one such episode, she found and killed her brother, as punishment for his betrayal, but was seemingly unphased when she came to.  After this, she decided to use her powers to help the Allies, and served in the Hellenic Royal Army now exiled in Egypt, as well as the British Armed Forces in the Mediterranean, but she soon transferred to a position with the Royal Navy in the Arctic Ocean, protecting the stretch of sea between Greenland and Nazi occupied Norway, so that American supply convoys could sustain Britain's supplies.  Yet she soon found herself aboard the HMS Prince of Wales, one of the more modern ships of the Royal Navy, in hunting down the elusive new German warship: the Bismarck.  Helena watched in horror as the monstrous vessel sank the HMS Hood, the pride of the Royal Navy, and made the ultimate sacrifice when she fended off salvo after salvo of gunfire from the Bismarck and the Prinz Eugen while her comrades made their retreat.  An explosion from two live rounds fired from Prinz Eugen knocked her unconscious in midair, causing her to fall headlong into the Arctic Ocean.

For sixty-four years, she remained in suspended animation while the world around her changed, until one day her body was found by the Teen Titans, who were returning from an overseas mission in Sweden at the behest of their teammate Red Star.  Immediately, they took her back to Titans Tower where she was thawed out and revived.  Helena was shocked to learn that the world had changed, but exceedingly relieved to know that the Allies had won while she was on ice, and Greece was free again.  Though she could return home, the time she spent recuperating with the Titans made her feel as if she was part of a family again.  So, Fury stayed on board to fight and punish the worst offenders in Jump City, as one of the Teen Titans!

Okay, so for Helena's backstory, I went with somewhat of a departure from her origin story in the comics, mainly because in Greek Mythology, the Furies weren't just spirits who punished crimes against mothers, but they punished criminals of all sorts: murderers, traitors, frauds, etc.  I also decided to have her be a closet Hellenic Polytheist so as to make her brother's betrayal have more of an impact.  As for why she has tan skin?  Like Freefall, she's from the Mediterranean, so she tans real easily, and she doesn't get sunburns.  Helena's outfit was actually inspired by one of the armor sets from one of my favorite video games Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, namely the Brawler's set.  I just changed the color schematic to match that of her outfit in the comics.  Her skirt is colored differently for good reason.  The light blue part represents her own hometown of Athens, whilst the red half and pteruges represent her home's ancient rival: Sparta, which was where she headed immediately after fleeing Athens and before arriving in Elis.  Another part of Helena's backstory seen here was also inspired by Captain America's, in that she was in suspended animation for a long time.  I had her join the Titans because it reflects the status of kids during the 40's.  In the 1940's, kids were seen but not heard, and I felt that Helena would have more of a voice if she was a teenager in the 21st century.  Nevertheless, she can be a bit clueless from time to time when it comes to things like texting, social media and gaming.

She's the best friend of Troia, Supergirl, Starfire, Nightwing, Cyborg, Tempest and Captain Marvel, and knows Greek, English, Italian, Turkish, Coptic and Arabic.  She's very passionate, loud and sometimes overdramatic, but she's also incredibly smart, always loving a chance to go see theatrical productions of the great Athenian playwrights: Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripedes, and her personal favorite: Aristophanes.  Helena spends a lot of time reading the works of philosophers such as Plato, Socrates and Aristotle, but she also loves attending the Greek festivals at Jump City's local Greek Orthodox communities, so as to reconnect with her heritage.  That said, she loves traveling to her home with the other Titans, especially to Delos: sacred birthplace of Artemis and Apollo, Naxos: one of the finest wine-making islands in Greece, the battlefields of Thermopylae where Leonidas and the 300 stood against the Persians, her own hometown of Athens, and its ancient rival: Sparta.  When not at Titans Tower, Helena usually resides in Themyscira, and has been made an honorary Amazon for her deeds in battle during WWII, and for her deeds in helping the British Armed forces against the Axis, she is also the only Teen Titan to have been made a Knight of the Garter by Queen Elizabeth II.

Disclaimer:  Helena Kosmatos belongs to DC Comics, Roy Thomas, Dann Thomas & Tom Grindberg.

Interesting. I’ll have to look more into it, but once I learn more information about her, I’m sure she’ll make a wonderful addition to the gallery. Her Brazilian background would make even more sense for my take of DC Comics, seeing as Themyscira’s location means that the Amazons would definitely have made contact with the tribes of Central and South America long before the Spanish and Portuguese ever did. As for the outfit, I’m certain we could modify it with a more Hellenic style, with some Brazilian flare to it in the form of weapons and decorations for her armor.

Precisely. Though the bracers, I was thinking, would actually extend from her forearm right down to just above her wrists. I have this book on how to read Medieval armor from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and apparently the bracers encase the entire forearm to those precise measurements. That said, at least we know she can use a sword as well.

You know, I was also unsure of how old Yara was going to be. If she will be a teenage Wonder Woman, then she will be a perfect fit for Titans Academy. Of course, she’ll need a new mantle as well, as it would already be confusing enough with two superheroines with the same code name.

Hmm....That just might work. Though I’m not sure what Xingu the word means in English. I’m assuming it’s Tupi for river, but I don’t speak the Tupi languages at all. Still, I do know one Tupi word that has carried over is “cougar”.

I found the Portuguese version of that name: “Guardião do xingu”. Though, I think I have another one in mind: Iemanjitá, after the Brazilian Portuguese name for Yemoja, an African river goddess among the Yoruba tribe. It would be fitting, seeing as Brazil also has a history with the Atlantic Slave Trade. The Tupi designs would appear on her armor.

That could work, along with Hitler’s perverse view of the “Aryan Race”. The Aryans were actually more related to the various ethnic groups in India. Hitler’s corruption of it could also be something she agrees with wholeheartedly to be a monstrosity.

Well she only has eternal youth, but I suppose we could work out something for Power Boy. In his comic origin, he has a crush on Supergirl, but since she was rescued by Batman, Superman as well as the Teen Titans, they could have inspired him to help him overcome Darkseid’s influence over him, give him the hope that he needed to fight back rather than comply. He could be given the alias of “Elpidios” which in Greek means “hopeful”
