In 1492, with the fall of Granada and the end of the Reconquista, Spain and Portugal expelled Jewish communities that lived in the Iberian Peninsula since the days of the Roman Empire. When they did that, they started a new chapter of the Jewish Diaspora, and these Sephardic Jews were prompted with a difficult question: Where would they go? They were penniless and impoverished from having to sell all their belongings, and no European nation would have them. While many reconnected with their relatives in Islamic North Africa, many others, along with a sizable number of Muslims, chose to follow the new routes discovered for Spain by one deceitful, greedy and self-absorbed Genoese mariner, Cristoforo Colombo. This soon faced repercussions, as a Spanish law enacted in 1501 decreed that in order to depart for the New World, prospective colonists had to be Catholic and prove a "purity of blood". Any single Jewish ancestor would bar them from crossing, but many did. Through illicit means, forged papers or by simply jumping ship, they arrived. Yet as seen throughout history, there were those who did not fight with the conquistadors or get involved with African slave trades...

Ever since 112 CE, when trade began with the Roman Empire, there was a sizable community of Hellenized Jews living in Themyscira, and the Amazons were happy to have them, as while they were Hellenic Polytheists, they were also religiously tolerant towards most religions. Since then, the Queens of Themyscira viewed themselves as protectors of the Jews, and when she heard of the situation of the Jews in Iberia, Queen Sarukê II offered land, employment and religious freedom to any Jews and Muslims fleeing the Spanish Inquisition. While there were small Muslim groups who came and prospered, Sephardic Jews from Spain and Portugal flocked to Themyscira in droves, so much so that Amazoniapolis now has a slew of Jewish owned businesses as well as a total of four synagogues; their floors covered in sand following the Sephardic tradition. These Sephardic Jews had been mariners and cartographers back in Spain and Portugal and now put their skills of navigating the seas to a new purpose: making Spain and Portugal pay. Sephardic Amazons played a vital role in the naval clashes against Spain and Portugal, and one of their most incredible acts was the rescue of Tupi refugees fleeing the Portuguese onslaught. The result of this encounter led to the creation of a new Brazilian Amazon community, which only grew more vibrant with the arrival of liberated Africans to the archipelago. One such intermarriage, though, had untold results: the birth of Yara Flores.

Born in 2025, Yara's family were Hellenized to the point that they worshipped the Olympian Gods, but still had ties to the Jewish community. Her mother, Valentina Vila Flores, was an officer in Themyscira's navy famed for her no tolerance policy towards drug smuggling and fending off Venezuelan pirates, but her father was Zeus: King of Olympus. As such, from birth, she had many of the same traits, powers and abilities possessed by Princesses Diana and Donna. When word of this reached the royal court, Queen Hippolyta II knew this girl was meant to do great things. She had Valentina promoted to the rank of admiral in recognition of her bravery and merit, which caused the Flores family to afford the trappings of the aristocracy, and have proximity to the royal family as well. It was thanks to this social mobility that Yara met and bonded with her half-sisters, Donna Troy, and Maria Mendoza, who trained her how to ride a horse, shoot a bow, and fight with the spear, sword, axe and mace. Yet they also knew it was vital for Yara to be exposed to other cultures. So Donna took Yara to Rio de Janeiro one day to give her a sense of what life was like in the outside world. Initially, Yara was not fond of the corruption and crime ridden in the land of her Tupi ancestors, but they happened to arrive during Carnival, and it had a profound impact on her. Enamored by the outfits of the Carnival dancers, and wanting to take a stand against corruption and organized crime, Yara decided to take on injustice head on, just like her mother. She took up the name of Guarani, and left with Donna to Titans Academy, where she quickly joined the ranks of the Teen Titans!

So, for Yara's design, I was going for a mix of the costumes worn by Carnival dancers, the outfit worn by Cassie Sandsmark in the Ame-Comi series, as well as Yara's armor in the comics. However, I made some twerks to the last part of the costume, as her armor made me think of Medieval plate armor, so I decided to add in two plate leg harnesses, as well as a partial arm harness, pauldron and gauntlet for her left arm. As for why I had Warmi Khapaq be one of her mentors, is because in the comics, Yara uses golden bolas instead of a lasso, and the Inca warriors were known to use bolas in their wars against other city-states in the Andes as well as against the Spanish. Now, why did I give her Sephardic Jewish heritage? Well, I was watching this miniseries on Jewish pirates, and was surprised to learn that there were a number of Sephardic Jews living in the New World, one of which helped establish the Jewish community in New York. I should also note that while the Amazons tolerate Judaism and Islam, they have a no-tolerance policy when it comes to Christianity, which I may have to write a history literary piece about. At Titans Academy, Yara is Donna's mentee, and is a member of the Martial Arts Club. She is best friends with Robin, Nightstar, Stargirl, Ms. Martian, Static, Blue Beetle and especially Mirage. As they both are Brazilian, Yara and Miriam get along like two peas in a pod, as they are very much alike in terms of personality, and they share the same hobbies as well.
