Description "We Amazons do not judge others by the color of their skin.  I may look different than my sisters and one of my mothers, but I'm still a Princess of Themyscira; daughter of a Khagan."

Maiôsara of Themyscira was not like her half-sisters, Diana and Donna, but in spite of these, she still retained all the powers and abilities of a demigoddess.  Her origins, though, began long before she was born...

During the Colonization of the Americas, European slavers forcefully uprooted thousands of innocent African men, women and children to their American colonies so as to feed their massive plantations and haciendas.  Over a third of these were sent to the French colony of St. Domingue, now modern-day Haiti, where enslaved Africans suffered at the hands of their French owners to feed Europe's ever increasing love of sugar and coffee.  Thousands died both on the plantations, and on the voyage across the Atlantic, due to horrific conditions.  Yet not all of the slave ships, whose holds were crammed with as many slaves as possible, arrived at their intended destinations...

Beginning in the 16th century, the Amazons began raiding Spanish treasure ships to fill Themyscira's treasury, but one night, as a slave ship dropped anchor for the crew to rest and resupply before going onward to Cuba, the Amazons intercepted it, believing it to be flowing with gold.  What they found instead, horrified them.  The sight of innocent people crammed into such deplorable conditions broke their hearts, but it also motivated them to take action, and over the next three centuries, the Amazons increasingly attacked and raided several French, British and Spanish slave ships in the Caribbean, killing the officers and often enslaving the rest of the crews.  Once the ships were secured, the Amazons sailed back to Themyscira, liberating all the captives aboard.  Once ashore, the liberated peoples were given the option of either returning to their homes in Africa, or being free to start anew in Themyscira.

Freed from a life of eternal suffering, and grateful to their liberators, many of these Africans chose the latter.  The Amazons used interchangeable terms to describe the new African community in Themyscira: Ethiopians, Nubians, Libyans and Numidians, after the terms that the Ancient Greeks and Romans called African peoples outside of Egypt.  Many adapted well to Amazon society, and accepted the terms used by their fellow Amazons.  Despite coming from varying regions and tribes of West Africa, these African Amazons easily communicated with one another via Greek and Latin creole.  Many of these Africans even converted to Hellenic Polytheism; adding their own various African religious elements, not unlike Haitian Voodoo.  Though there had been a small Muslim community in Themyscira since the 14th century, when the Amazons first made contact with shipwrecked sailors from the Mali Empire - an act that introduced them to Africanized Islam, which was more in touch with their cultural, religious and societal norms than the versions practiced in the Middle East.  The Amazons continued these raids until the 19th century, when the Atlantic slave trade was finally put to an end.  Many of these Africans in Themyscira often intermarried with the Amazons, allowing both Steppe and African cultures to further intermingle.

One Amazon who was descended from those liberated Africans was none other than Philippis: confidant, wife and consort of Queen Hippolyta II.  After Diana's birth, Hippolyta was heartbroken and thrilled to know that the girl's father was Zeus.  Due to both being women, Philippis and Hippolyta were saddened by the fact that they couldn't have a daughter of their own.  However, Aphrodite felt bad for the couple, and temporarily turned Philippis into a hermaphrodite, capable of producing sperm while still remaining female.  Upon realizing this, Hippolyta and Philippis immediately took advantage of it, and it wasn't long before their union conceived a child all of their own.  Nine months later, the queen gave birth to her and Philippis' daughter, Maiôsara.

Much like Diana, Maiôsara received the same education in the hopes that she would someday be a candidate to succeed her mothers when she came of age.  Diana was initially jealous, but as the two trained and read together, the two sisters became thick as thieves.  Although when it came to riding and hunting on the vastness of Themyscira's wide open plains, they would occasionally get into a friendly rivalry.  When Steve Trevor crash landed on Themyscira, and Diana was chosen to escort him back, Maiôsara volunteered to stay behind, but Hippolyta and Philippis asked their daughter to accompany her sister on her mission, to ensure nothing happened to her.  Upon hearing what the mortals called Diana, Maiôsara decided to take up a codename of her own, based on one of the terms her African ancestors were called all those centuries ago: Nubia!

Okay, so for Nubia's ancestry and backstory, I had to do a bit of historical research.  I already knew about how awful the conditions were in the holds of slave ships, but it was worse for the women, who were kept on deck; close to the cabins, so that the captain and officers could have easy access to them for glaringly obvious reasons.  I also gave Nubia an actual name, as she never got one in the comics.  I figured the name, Maiôsara, would fit her, as all Amazon queens of Themyscira would have either Greek or Sarmatian names, so as not to lose ties to their origins, both as daughters of Ares and as nomads of the steppes.  Now, as for Aphrodite helping Philippis out?  That was actually something she did throughout Greek Mythology.  Being the Goddess of Love, she is never one to turn a blind eye to make a couple's wishes come true.  This can be seen in the tale of Galatea, as well as in The Iliad and The Aeneid.

Her outfit is actually a combination of the one Diana wore in the Injustice series, and the one worn by Artemis of Bana-Mighdall, with elements of the ones she wore after Crisis on Infinite Earths.  She is the half-sister of Donna Troy, as well as an auxiliary member of the Justice League.  She's also the sister-in-law of Roy Harper, AKA Arsenal, and the aunt of Lian Harper, AKA Speedy.  Much like her mothers, Maiôsara has a soft spot for helping refugees, oppressed peoples, and considers herself a sworn enemy against both fascism and terrorism.  When not being a superheroine, she loves dancing, feasting, drinking, swimming, bathing, and especially riding her horse across the windswept plains of Themyscira and hunting with her friends and family.  She is also the wife of Cuban dissident-turned "prince" of Themyscira, Lucio Martinez, and the mother of Daphne Martinez.

Disclaimer: Nubia belongs to DC Comics, Don Heck and Robert Kanigher.

Thanks for the advice, and for the watch by the way. I also like how you redesigned some of the characters from the Teen Titans anime. (yes, I refer to that show as anime due to the animation style)

Thank you! I felt it was time to give her some long needed attention that is a bit lacking in the mainstream comics and media.

She's perfect. You translated that outfit design wonderfully to her, while adding some interesting highlights. The reworked origin you gave her makes for a unique take; it's much better than what she was given in the comics.

Thank you! I’m glad she turned out the way she did. I thought that the 70’s origin she had in the comics was very bad, and it was only fitting that I had Nubia’s origin relate to her being Afro-Caribbean. Interestingly, I also learned that after the abolition of African slavery, the British began using “indentured servants” from India to continue operations in the Caribbean. So perhaps there could be a few Indian Amazons as well. I’m also thinking that Etta Candy would definitely get along with Nubia, and be the one to have her appreciate fine Jamaican rum, given Themyscira’s location in the Caribbean.

This isn't actually the first fan universe I've come across that made Nubia the daughter of Hippolyta and Philippis.

Are her husband and daughter original characters or based off people from the comics?

Nice! Though what thoughts do you have on Nubia’s ancestry?

As for her husband and daughter, those are based off people from the Gen13 comics.

I think Nubia's ancestry makes these Amazons look far better than those from the New 52 who killed sailors after having sex with them...

Thanks. I figured that the Amazons would be unique in that sense, and it gives a better explanation for those who look like they’re of African descent. Though the alliance between Themyscira and Mali was just something that came off the top of my head.

Ages ago, in the 14th century, the Mali Empire organized an expedition across the Atlantic. The sailors came back with reports of a great river in the middle of the ocean. Hearing these reports, the ruler at the time, Mansa Abubakri II saw an opportunity for wealth and adventure, and personally led an expedition of 2000 ships to find this river. Sadly, once they went past the horizon, they were never heard from again. According to legend, they ended up in the New World a century before Columbus did.

Also, I just want to bring up something I love about your art style... I love how happy your heroes look with their huge smiles.

Thanks. I figured that the whole grimacing superhero look would get old real fast, so I wanted these characters to show other emotions aside from anger. Besides, focus groups show that people feel safer when they see others smile.

Next in the roster block is Roxane Pelligrino-Fairchild, AKA Freefall. Expect her to have a bit more emphasis on her Italian heritage.
