Description The room and all the objects were made at a real scale. I worked on this scene from december 2003 until late june 2004. This image took 8 days, 8 hours, 49 minutes and 59 seconds to render.

I used radiosity, caustics (for the globe on the desk) and SSS (for the courtains).

Special thanks to Shademaster and Cinemike for suggestions and critiques during the creative process.

Be sure to also check out the second render .

I recommend you to view the "Making of Digital Morning" page which shows all the images I saved during the creative process.

This image has:The image was rendered with:
  • Processor: Intel Pentium 4, 1.7 Ghz;
  • Memory: 1 GB RIMM;
  • HDD: 20 GB SCSI (10000 RPM);

I had a jawdrop when I saw this. Especially when I saw that it's almost 8 years old! And the render time!!

Man, I envy these skills

Very well made, quality of textures is extraordinary!

You work on this in a team? Ain't done that yet. I've got a Quad Core 4 gb memory blah de blah and it dramatically decreases render time I would suggest upgrade if you have the money if not well you can produce this so keep it up.

Hello.
The image was done on an Athlon XP at 1,5Ghz, an old PC.

Now, I have a new PC. Intel Core 2 Duo with 8Gb of RAM and as we speak, I am working on a new image, of a greater complexity and realism.

Anyways, thanks for the message.

Great work guys. One question tho. When u say it was made at a "real scale" I assume u mean 1:1 - arent most models built liek this??? Mine certainly are. I dont see why this makes it more impressive. I may well be misunderstanding you here but the image is not 1:1 is it? if it was it wouldnt fit on my screen!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

robodesign In reply to niknak [2005-11-27 19:26:52 +0000 UTC]

The idea is ... the models are correctly scaled in relation to each other. Why mention this? There are n00bs saying stuff like "the mouse is too big compared to the keyboard" (or whatever). It might be, compared to his/her mouse, but that's the way I got my mouse .

Only critique being the blooms on the curtains. A bit much for such a realistically inclined piece. But still this is one fantastic scene.

Congrats on the DD! With the amount of effort you've put in, I sincerely think you deserve it!

You've done an incredible job with the overall lighting in this piece. I would love to see the rig that you've come up with. There's a great sense of the early morning brightness there and I applaud you for that. It would have been nice to see just a bit of particle interaction in the air, but I would say that it is indeed better to leave it out than to overdo the effect, as many are wont to do.

The most noticeable feature that clued be into the fact that this was indeed a 3D image was your green "glow" on all of your computer equipment. This glow seems. . .overdone. Too exaggerated? In comparing your image with similar products around my own house, there isn't nearly as much of a light-bloom from such a small LED. Also, in your image, these small lights actually seem quite noticeable in this bright, early morning room. In reality, they probably wouldn't have as much significance.

. . .I absolutely envy your desk. What a beautifully done texture. I only wish that there was some evidence that the desk had been used -- small scrapes or scratches, weathering where wrists or cups sat, pens/pieces of paper scattered on top of it. Dust? I am meticulously clean, but even these small things find their way onto my poor, overused desk.

Onto what perhaps bothers (and intrigues) me most about this image: this strange, blue globe that you've added to the scene. It is beautiful, lovely, a wonder to look at and ponder, to be sure. But. . .what is it? Is it self-illuminating? Self-illuminating and somehow keeping all of it's light to itself? I looked at your other render (this render is by far the superior composition, if I may say so), but can't quite account for any light hitting the globe externally to illuminate it in such a way. It baffles me. Truly.

I am curious. Just how is the calendar being held onto the wall? And does it really have only two really thick pages?

I don't understand the amount of artifacting I'm seeing with how long the creation and rendering of this scene took.

^_^ I adore when artists are able to not become so focused on their work that they can't joke about it. 1.44 Gb! HA! I love it! I'm hoping that the 30 in Feb was the same. Awesome job!

Thank you.
All the jokes in the image are intentionally implemented in it.
To see how the globe it should have been in the final click on the link: [link] . In the final renders it doesn't look as realistic as in this work in progress render .
