Description Hedgehog or Claret Cup Cactus
Echinocereus triglochidiatus
Cactaceae Cactus Family

Name
(e-keen-oo-KAY-ree-us tri-glow-chidi-A-tus) Echinocerens is from the Greek echinos, meaning "a hedgehog," and cereus meaning "a wax taper." These names refer to the plant's spiny resemblance to a hedgehog (or so the early Europeans thought) and the plant's shape, respectively. Triglochidialus means "three barbed bristles" and refers to the straight spines arranged in clusters of three. Also called claret cup cactus, after the reddish, cup-shaped flowers.

Description
A small barrel-shaped cactus. Few to several hundred stems in a compact hemispheric clump or mound. The stems are mainly cylindrical, up to one foot long and one to two and one-half inches thick, and with nine or ten ribs. The central spines are straight or slightly curved and one to two inches long. Smaller radial spines arise from below the central spines at a sharp angle.

Stems are green and contain chlorophyll. There are no leaves.

Flowers are scarlet red, with many petals, and are cup-shaped. The flowers are one to two inches long and grow below the stem's apex. Hummingbirds are the primary pollinators and must stick their entire head into the flower to reach the nectar chambers at the flower's base. In the process, the hummingbird's forehead gets dusted with pollen. The fruits are red at maturity and are edible. Flowers bloom April through June, from low to higher elevations. This is the first cactus to bloom in the spring.

The flowers stay open at night, unlike many other species of cacti whose flowers close in the evening. The flowers last three to five days.

Yes, probably you are right. Too bad since flowers are such beautiful works of natural art. Sometimes when I am photoing them, I just have to stop and stare at the intricate patterns and color and just worship nature for her wonders.

Definitely a cholla flower but hard to tell which type of cholla since most have the same types of flowers just in a different assortment of colors.

The shape of the cholla plant and joints as well as the direction of the growth usually tells you the type although there are many hybrids since most are capable of cross pollenating.

RooCat In reply to glunac [2007-06-06 03:42:20 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I made sure in the photos that I got a clear focus on the greenies in the center as it was just too interesting compared even to other cactus flowers. Most have a vanilla colored thing, either a ball or a little jack-like thing. These are the first little greenies I've seen, all lined up in a circle.

Actually, it's more fuchsia than anything else even though the info. calls it scarlet. However, call it pink if it makes you like it more.

Yes, we had some cacti bloom when it normally doesn't because of the rain pattern in April and May with none in February, the reverse of normal. I was able to get some I haven't before.

I featured you as well as others in my Wild Thing journal: [link]

This flower has some beautiful colors . .too bad that left side is a little bit blured . . iany way, great photo

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RooCat In reply to Shiryou-san [2007-06-02 09:37:30 +0000 UTC]

Picky, aren't you? Unfortunately, every macro by its very nature will have something out of focus as the dof is so very shallow on them. The plane of focus is measured in fractions of inches unlike regular photography. I decided that having the stamen, pistil and all the grains of pollen in focus was the better photo. To do that, it was necessary to move the plane of focus inside the flower. I could have centered it but that would have made all the pedal tips out of focus so I chose the lesser area for out of focus. Tis the nature of the beast.

Shiryou-san In reply to RooCat [2007-06-02 16:37:16 +0000 UTC]

Okay . .I understand now And I am not picky I only said that it would be even better if it weren't so blured

RooCat In reply to Shiryou-san [2007-06-02 18:06:22 +0000 UTC]

I was teasing you when I called you picky. That is why I put the laugh and smile in front of it. Knowing macro photography, I know the perfection that you would like is not possible although I strive to deliver as close to it as I can. Certain details are more important than others to each photographer since our tastes vary. We do what we can.

What you say is true. Each photographer wants include something diffrent in his photos
And about being picky - I know you said it on purpose that's why I put the emot with tongue after denying it

I was unsure of which of the 3 identical posts - yeah, dA is gy again - to answer.

Yes, we do have some different looking flowers here. I found a number of them from our strange rains in April and May when we usually don't get rain. Get to get them edited and decide which I like best! The color was breath taking but gone so quickly. I don't have that many hedgehogs, unlike the various cholla and prickly pear. Prickly pear in particular comes in peach, yellow, orange, and an almost chartruse.
