You've embraced the 'new changelings are flutterponies from G1' headcanon too? I've had that headcanon for months! Yay!

It'd be cool if they got new, mysterious magical powers in their new forms, to either replace shape-shifting or add on to them.

Well in defense of the colors, it's partly for two reasons. 
One: Changelings are based of mythological 'fairy' creatures. Fairies tended to be brightly colored 
Two: Many beetles are brightly colored, such as the Rainbow Beetle Thorax seems to be based on.

I think the new design for the Changelings wouldn't have been too bad at all, if they just weren't so bright and colorful x_x If you look past the colors, and just the physical design, they do make a fitting "good" counterpart to the "evil" look we otherwise have always seen them with (though I will always prefer the "evil" look, anyways ).
